this is why people ultimately get forced to upgrade their software when the support is no longer offered for those products. Do the majority of people really need to buy a new MS office suite every few years? I doubt it, but it ends up happening as the older products might not work with new OS versions or other various reasons.

Eventually GLB "classic" will die off and WGG hopes everyone will shift over to their other products. Im guessing they think that the other products will be better for them in the long run to invest their limited time and resources to developing and supporting.

Personally I would have no interest spending future money with WGG since I have invested alot of time and money into the hopes of this game evolving into something more. I do not blame WGG for their business decisions, even though I dont agree with them.

One could say that the proverbial writing on the wall is getting bolder and bolder as time passes for glb "classic".

No, no, Corndog says they're adding new users to GLB by the bucketful and the game is growing by leaps and bounds. He wouldn't lie. Ever.

I was waiting until Day 1, but here's how many 0-day-old dots there were at various times this off-season, including today.

S39 D46: 5,777
S39 D48: 7,214
S40 D -6: 7,814
S40 D -1: 8,467

So, it's looking more and more like the size of the Rookie Class of S40 will top out no higher than 9,000 on Day 1 and probably not even that. For comparison's sake on Day 33 last season the size of the Rookie Class of S39 was 11,310... though to be fair, that total would include dots that were created mid-season. I just did a check of dots that were created mid-season in S39 (dots aged 1 to 39 days old), and found 1,534 of them still alive, quite a bit more than I was expecting, though history shows that mid-season dots are much more likely than off-season dots to get retired early, long before reaching Lv79.

Still, I'm thinking more and more that it's not fair to compare S39 Day 33 to Season 40 Day 1. While my ego wants to point to these numbers and shout, "There, see? I was right! GLB is dying!", it's looking more and more like it's probably best to just compare same-day totals season to season to get the fairest and most accurate picture.

By the way, for what it's worth, earlier this morning there were 8,693 dots aged between 0 and 1 days old, also known as the Rookie Class of S40.

To catch up to the Rookie Class of S39, there will have to be an additional 2,617 dots created mid-season before Day 33 of Season 40.

Update for Day 9: there are now 9,033 dots in the Rookie Class of S40. Of those, 449 were "mid-season" dots created on or after Day 1.

It's looking more and more like the Rookie Class of S40 is going to end up smaller than the Rookie Class of S39.

And rookie class of 39 was smaller than rookie class of 38, and rookie class of 29 was smaller than rookie class of 28,. and rookie class 19 was smaller than rookie class of 18.

That's just kind of the natural trend of games, they generally don't grow over time. You hear more about "first week sales" than you do "6th year 4th month sales".

Over 9000 (heh) players is enough to fill several leagues. Many people are still enjoying the game, many private forums are still active and planning teams for next season, and we have no intentions of shutting down the servers in the foreseeable future.

Trying to "prove" that a game you supposedly like is dying seems futile.

Alrighty, this is where I post the other numbers I mentioned I was tracking.

Here's what the size of each class was as of Season 40, Day 1:

CLASS OF S40 --- 8,693
CLASS OF S39 --- 7,963
CLASS OF S38 --- 6,821
CLASS OF S37 --- 7,813
CLASS OF S36 --- 6,691
CLASS OF S35 --- 6,619
CLASS OF S34 --- 7,828
CLASS OF S33 --- 7,128
CLASS OF S32 --- 8,892
CLASS OF S31 --- 10,050
CLASS OF S30 --- 6,244
CLASS OF S29 --- 5,824
CLASS OF S28 --- 5,160
CLASS OF S27 --- 6,062
CLASS OF S26 --- 6,602
CLASS OF S25 --- 6,874

Sorry, Corndog, but it hasn't been a steady decline. Lots of interesting ups-and-downs in those numbers, which suggests that there have been multiple seasons in the recent past where a given Rookie class has actually been larger than the one before it.

And that further suggests that if you guys at WGG would start giving a few damns about the game that made you all your damn money in the first place, you'd find that there's more life left in GLB1 than you think -- but only if you cultivate it, nurture it, and continue to help it grow.

Instead, you're getting into pointless arguments with people on the forums, making outlandish claims about the health of the company that whip-saw back and forth depending on the point you want to be making at any given time, and letting minor-but-annoying bugs and hiccups fester without fixing them. Those sort of actions tell the userbase that the powers-that-be at WGG don't really care much anymore. And that's why so many of us scoff when you declare, "But we do still care," because your every action shows otherwise. And actions speak louder than words.

Nobody is doubting that there is life left in GLB, which is why we are keeping the servers running, and plan to do so for a long time in the future.

Those numbers pretty much do the opposite of prove your point. There was a lot of "nurturing" during that time, and numbers remained fairly stagnant. Hell, if your numbers are correct, whatever we have been doing in the past 6 months has been pretty successful at getting people making players.

I think you're mis-reading the numbers if that's what you're getting from it. That's not how many Rookie dots were created in each class... that's how many dots are left in each class right now. It would probably be far more useful if I could get the CREATION totals for each season, but alas, I just started tracking these numbers late last season, so I don't have that. What I do have are the current totals.

Also, there you go changing your argument from post-to-post again. In the past, you guys always used to laugh off the "game is dying" crowd by assuring us that the userbase was still growing. Now, you're saying it stayed stagnant that whole time? Were you lying then, or are you lying now?

My numbers show it wasn't anything nearly that simple. The Classes of S31 and S37 both seem to have had big spikes compared to their surrounding seasons, for example.

---

But again, you're sitting in here arguing with me over the rate at which the game is dying. I have a better way for you to spend your time: WORK ON THE DAMN GAME. Back up your claims that you still care about this game. Go fix a bug. Go answer a Support Ticket. Prove me wrong with your ACTIONS, not with your words in some stupid forum thread.

You're missing the whole damn point. Again.

No deception, just you mis-understanding the numbers. Again, those are the current totals.

That's why I'll be curious to see how the size of the Class of S40 tops out at the END of Season 40, so I can compare it to how the class of S39 looked at the END of Season 39. I addressed that a couple of pages ago.

At the END of S39, there were 11,310 dots total in the Class of S39.

At the BEGINNING of S40, there were 8,693 dots total in the Class of S40, but that's not the final total. Remember, the total for S39 included dots created mid-season as well, and the book on the Class of S40 isn't closed yet, and won't be closed until Day 39.

However, looking at the rate of mid-season dots being created so far in S40, it looks like the Class of S40 is on-pace to fall short of the Class of S39.

Understand my numbers now?

Good, as long as you're going to spend that time working on GLB1. Which I doubt.

Probably a good idea, Deathblade. I actually thought one of the conditions of you being employed by Warrior General was that you wouldn't post like yourself in the forums anymore. Obviously Bort no longer gives a shit about that either.

I think I should just leave this thread alone for now. I'll come back to it on Day 39 so we can do an apples-to-apples comparison of the full Class Of S40 compared to the full Class Of S39.

But here's my ultimate point in all of this. Corndog's message is basically, "All games decline, and there's nothing we can do about it, but hey, everything's fine anyway, so y'all are silly for worrying about it because we're gonna keep the lights on around here until Season 347 at least!" Which is contradictory on its face, because the game can't be "fine" and "declining" at the same time.

MY message is basically, "The game is declining faster than you think, and that decline will reach a point of critical mass, a point of no-return, in under a year. However, it's not too late to change that if you put in some effort to ensure the long-term viability of GLB1 -- something you seem totally unwilling to do."

Given how the classes of Season 31 and Season 37 seem to have been so much bigger than their surrounding classes, that tells me that there are, in fact, still things that can be done to increase the excitement and activity level of GLB1's userbase -- but the WGG staff has to DO them.

Instead, we're clearly at a point where the users of GLB1 care more than the staffers do. Last season, I ran 2 teams, posted rankings in the NA Pro forums every 2 days, contributed to another league forum, and did my best to answer some of the easier questions in the FAQ forum so that other people smarter than me could turn their attention to the harder questions. This season, I'm going all-out with a team in WL, making tweaks and changes to another team to keep them competitive in NA Pro, contributing to the activity of the league forums for both teams, and still replying in FAQ. Others are contributing in similar fashion, running teams, giving advice, posting rankings and analysis, and doing what they can to keep GLB1 active and fun.

Corndog, what have you done this season to keep GLB1 active and fun?

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking before I knew it and as he grew
He said, "I’m gonna be like you, Dad,
You know I’m gonna be like you"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, dad, I don’t know when,
But we'll get together then, Son,
You know we'll have a good time then.

My son turned ten just the other day
He said "Thanks for the ball, Dad, come on lets play
can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do" He said "Thats okay"
And then he walked away but his smile never dimmed
And said "I’m gonna be like him, yeah
You know I’m going to be like him"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, dad, I dont know when,
But we'll get together then, Son,
You know we'll have a good time then.

Well he came from college just the other day
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I’m proud of you, can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile

"What I'd really like, Dad, is to borrow the car keys
See you later, can I have them please?"

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, Son, I dont know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad,
You know we'll have a good time then.

I’ve long since retired, my son's moved away
I called him up just the other day........
I said "I'd like to see you if you don’t mind"
He said "I'd love to Dad, if I could find the time.
You see my new jobs a hassle, and the kids have the flu.
But It's sure nice talking to you, Dad,
It's been sure nice talking to you........"
And as I hung up the phone it occurred to me
He'd grown up just like me,
My boy was just like me..............

And the cats in the cradle and the silver spoon
Little boy blue and the man on the moon
When you comin home, Son, I dont know when,
But we'll get together then, Dad
We're gonna have a good time then.
