In stating the rule, the rule gets violated.
Perhaps some think the term 'mentally challenged' is not derogatory or offensive, in and of itself. But since we are all mentally challenged in some respect, I personally find it offensive when people treat me different or act differently because of my mental challenges.
Why just last week while I was out on the town, I ran into some friends who are nuclear physicists and they were discussing recent Large Hadron Collider CMS particle detector data depicting Higgs bosons produced by colliding protons which decayed into hadron jets and electrons. Seeing my clueless expression they clumsily tried to include me, unsuccessfully, by changing the subject of discussion several times.
Finally, after many moments of awkward silence, I figured I'd give it a try:
