YES!!! We finally got our first victory of the season! The Detroit Mob beat us last season. We got them this season 30-9. I'm certain now that our team has scored more points this season than we did in all of last season. Sadly, our schedule gets MUCH tougher now. In the meantime, our team's going off to celebrate!

WOODYS HOLD OFF LAUNCH 16-12

Expanded Box Score, Drive Summary, Play-by-Play: http://trendon.org/launch/games/3-5col.htm

YONKERS, New York. (AP) -- All offseason, Columbus' players swore they were better than how last season.

They certainly proved it Saturday.

The maligned Brett Lindberg threw for 229 yards, including a game-winning 77-yard pitch-and-toss to Johnny Atlas with 9:06 remaining, and the Woodys defense let loose another stellar defensive effort to help Columbus hold off the New York Launch 16-12.

Prior to Atlas' touchdown, the two teams combined for seven field goals and no touchdowns as each team repeatedly put the ball on the turf, killing drive after drive.

"We just have to forget about it, just forget the game ever happened and move on," safety Flargo La said. "Just go back and show people the real team that we have."

The Woodys held New York (3-2) to 222 total yards and allowed the Launch's offense just one third down conversion in the fourth quarter -- a surprising result for a team that many had competing for the BBB 16 title. For the game, Columbus allowed the Launch to convert on only 8-of-27 third downs.

Columbus bottled up the deadly accurate Christian Alexander (24-for-49, 161 yds), who was held below 50% completion for the first time since a May 17th loss at Atlanta. Under constant duress, the third-year starter was also harrassed by a swarming secondary that picked off one pass and batted away 18 others.

Defensively, the Launch continued to fly around, a formula that usually results in a W for them.

"We had one blip where we did not have the emotion necessary to play this game at a high level," coach Trendon Lynch, of the Atlas touchdown. "What's important is that we regroup, the leadership comes through and the players come back."

The feeling was quite different on the other sideline. Coach Collins -- whose team remained undefeted by virtue of two nailbiting 9-6 wins -- had cautioned that those wins wouldn't mean much if the Woodys didn't follow up with a strong performance.

"Losing this game would not have ruined us," Collins said. "Each week is its own challenge. Today, we stepped up."

The two defensive fronts routinely controlled the line of scrimmage on offense, often closing lanes before the backs could find a hole to hit. Columbus averaged a miserly 2.3 yards per carry which was dwarfed by New York's even worse 1.4 average.

Even still, the Launch nearly found a way to pull out a victory. That is, after they got out of their own way. With 1:53 remaining, New York forced a Andy Groom punt. Punt returned Fontaine Bojangles was abruptly met by halfback Laurie Wilson at his own 30, fumbling the ball and sealing the game for Columbus. Or so everyone thought.

On the ensuing play, Marvin Washington would cough up the ball a third time on a great hit by Tommi Lugabalugia. New York's Brick Schmithouse would jump in it first and the Launch were back in business.

Three consecutive incompletions left New York desparate, facing fourth-and-ten from their own 29 with 1:31 remaining. Alexander found Bojangles up the right side, who had gotten behind Joe Francis, for a 14-yard completion. Alexander would hook up with Bojangles for two more passes before the Woodys secondary stepped up and batted down two straight passes, finally sealing the game.

Thank you, Dome Patrol! I have tried to beat your team both season thus far. We'll get you next year, damn it! Our league has a bunch of very classy owners. I like it! I think you and I will both work our way to the top down the road. Having a bunch of dedicated players on the team certainly HAS to lead to more and more victories year after year. Good luck to you and your team.

I have been really impressed by the determination of you REDBOSOX. It's incredibly hard to keep a group of players together on a team that gets killed week in and week out. But it appears you have done so. A few seasons of getting the trash out of A #8 and sent here will push you guys up quite a bit, and just sticking with it, the occasional team will get gutted and move you up even more.

I agree with Tom. And that goes for several teams here in BBB#16. Things are already evening out in the league this season. There's alot less gap between the top and bottom. The scores are closer and competition is tighter week in and week out. Just making the playoffs this season will give anyone a shot. Because if you take the top 8 from either conference, I think anyone could win on any given day.
As far as recruiting goes it should help that we have a great group of owners and GM's in this league and a very active, fun League Forum. If Easy Co. was to advance to A league this season or next, there are several teams here that I wouldn't mind offering up one of my homeless players to. Or recommending to a friend.

You have to score more points than your opponent.
