Actually, it will be 102 when I hit that point.

You would think that I would be able to count by 3s at this juncture.

So how much punting, and how much confidence does it take to reach the gold?

Strength absolutely makes a difference no punts (though not the bar of course). I built him to get the gold bar as fast as possible, so I have only recently started adding to strength and his punt distance went up immediately.
