The University’s Division of Housing and Food Services is using reserve funds to cover this year’s $69,280.50 increase in subscription fees to its cable provider, Grande Communications, said Laurie Mackey, director of administrative services at the Division of Housing and Food Services.
“[The fund] is used for any types of costs that weren’t budgeted for that year,” Mackey said.
She said the division will consider increasing student costs for contracts next year if the division cannot cover the rates themselves.
“Grande charged each room in the residence hall $5.85,” Mackey said. “They are charging an additional $1.50 to cover Longhorn Network.”$1.50 per dorm room per month, when they pay $6 total for their cable. 25% of their cable bill in the dorms is for the Longhorn Network....in order to subsidize Grande carrying it to their other subscribers.
So basically the university is PAYING for Grande to carry the network. And that $70k was only for 4 months in 2011. So they are going to pay $280,000 a year so the students on campus can have the LHN. Therefore, Grande is passing a portion of the LHN cost to the University, who in turn pass it off to the students.
Then, as a portion of the funds that Grande has to pay for the LHN, the STUDENTS' MONEY will be remitted to ESPN.
ESPN will in turn use the money as a portion of the funds flowing back to t.u.
So... nearly 6% of the gross dollars that tu claims to be collecting from the LHN for academics are nothing more than "fees" that their own students are paying
