Real talk, if someone made a better version of dotball which had a less complicated AI structure, more granular attributes, and fully functional mobile apps, while keeping the core of "complicated" player building, they'd take in the dough.

Unfortunately it'll never happen, since even if a real developer lached onto the idea they'd undoubtedly enshittify it with microtransactions and ads.

100%. It would be made with mobile app mentality first, and that would suck. I love my browser based game when I'm at work.

Lol, I'm not qualified or smart enough to do that. I've worked in IT all my life, but on the way out.

Damn. I hadn't even thought about that. We probably only have a couple of years left as it is, then.

I don't think it would go anywhere soon, as long as Bort is making more money than he is losing. Just no major updates, any updates to the site would not be worth the risk of breaking other items. I had someone much smarter than me look into it this morning and they said it best:

You wouldn't be buying a sophisticated engine; you’re buying 20+ years of constraints that make improvement slow and risky.

Am I the only one wondering why we are talking about html and the engine in the same sense? Or am I an idiot, the backend is where the action happens. The front end(web) is just visualizing it.

Nah - not an idiot but HTML is what allows us to see the dots the engine produces. I'm sure there's SQL and either Java, Python or .Net (thinking back when this was first built) and HTML all in the game. My guess would be Java is the engine as developers liked it back in the day as it didn't come with as many difficulties as .NET did and I think Pythin was just starting out. Most rules engines used Java.

Yeah, looks like Java.

Obviously, don't have all the details of the entire site so just going off what we can tell publicly. When the front end is running on tech from 25 years ago, I can assure you the rest is the same.

Think about it this way, there is a good chance that Bort and the rest of us were using Windows 98 when he made GLB. He used tools that were compatible with software from back then. If Bort would have made any major updates (like fixing passing) he would have had to update to more modern tools which would have forced the move to HTML 5. The back end is so old that it can only work with HTML from 1999. Even their site code has incorrect and duplicate commands.

I've been mildly surprised no entity has yet stepped up and said "We could do that."

Probably because the people who know enough to take over also know that it would be a massive mess.

You'd have to get Bort to agree to hand over the code in the first place. He'd probably want a pretty penny for it, so you'd be paying upfront to inherit a dying game with a stagnant player base and 15-year-old spaghetti code that you might end up having to completely rewrite anyways.

EDIT: I am surprised that no one else has made something similar (at least nothing that I could find online).
