Top notch post, Warhawk.

The only thing I'd add for new owners (which I'd guess is not an issue for the OP) is to avoid leetspeak, txt talk, or any other kind of slang that might come off as immature and unprofessional. The GLB crowd is generally older and more mature than you'll find in other games (despite what you might see from a few forum trolls).

This is a tip not only for owners really. It should be for posting in general. Try to capitalize proper nouns (especially 'I') and beginnings of sentences. Just try to use correct grammar. That's a tough one since grammar isn't something everyone has mastered (I sure as hell haven't) but just try to use basic grammar. This should probably be more targeted towards owners looking for players and agents looking for teams, but it's nice to see good grammar around the GLB forums.

Also smarter and better looking. And modest.

I might have used more smart in this situation, but smarter is a word. Way to go Warhawk, I'll be pondering this one for some time.

Actually, a lulzy ad gets more attention. A super srs standard snoozefest like "i am with Paint Huffers [team link]. We are a good group of agents committed to winning blah blah blah" will turn off a lot more agents.

Depends on the agent, but I think an earnest ad works better with most.

I'm not talking about Pro/WL where an owner can say "look at our record and where we play, now sign".

Well, in that sense I'd say the best advice is to avoid broad, cliched statements that have no inherent meaning.

I have specifically seen "good group of agents committed to winning" on many occasions. The problem with that isn't so much that it's too serious, it's that it doesn't actually say anything useful. Any team would say that about themselves. Who's going to start off by saying "we're a bunch of bastards committed to losing"?

Anyway, after introducing myself I usually like to put the team link (and any other relevant links, like to a thread in TLFP) right away. I think people are more likely to click on them and check out the team/thread if you do that than if you put it at the end of the message. Usually after that the first thing I'll hit is the team's lifetime record, since we've been around for a while and have over 200 regular season wins. Then right into why we need their player and how we would use them.

In any case, though, there's plenty of ways to skin a cat. There's nothing wrong with a good lulzy ad, it's just that a lot of people don't realize they're not funny. Trying to be funny and bombing is a good way to not get anyone to sign. Except hipsters, I guess, who will sign with your team ironically.

And then you can lose ironically. Fun times.

Ultimately, the point is that you should play to your strong suits. If you've got a great team that speaks for itself, use that. If you're eloquent and smart, use that. If you're a funny guy, use that. I can see why you two would disagree on this point, tbh. Dub, I think you're a pretty funny guy, and I mean that sincerely. jdbolick, I could say plenty of nice things about you, but I'm not sure humor is your strong suit (you may very well be a really funny guy offline, I have no idea, I just don't get that impression online). But you are bright and well-spoken. If both of you were trying to recruit a player of mine, I'd expect very different approaches, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.
