I agree with all of this in principle, but IMO it should be more than just an automatic thing that the sim/player does versus it having to be a VIS check or something more to it. Also, would it stand to reason as an OC, that I should be able to run the deep zone defender out of the play, and have better underneath play potential WAY more often? I mean, as it sits now, the zone guy kinda sits in-between the deep route and the underneath route, waits for Ball Hawk to take over, and can then effectively be the double-team defender for both players...... kinda hard to have it both ways TBH. A player should never let a free WR run past him, and that zone player "should" stick with him if he sees the play right if that is all the OP is suggesting.
+1if that is the case
Well, the general thinking was that you assign the defender's zone coverage. You have 2 "simple" options and 1 "thinking" option. Naturally, there are other vision checks & the like made while in zone coverage but I'm just referring to the new ones needed.
You have an option to tell him to just "stay put in your zone & cover people in it". Thats the STRICT option & might be desirable in some situations where you don't want your defender "chasing cars" around. Likely a MLB who will see crossing routes all over for instance.
You have the option to say "follow ANYBODY that keeps going vertical". Thats the SAFE option & likely what you want a FS doing when its 3rd & 20 and an obvious deep passing situation. Or when you can't afford to get beat deep.
The option called DEFAULT (or could even be called NORMAL)...is for him to "think" before he starts following vertically & check to see if the receiver has coverage once he leaves "my zone". So that involves vision checks certainly & should involve chemistry imo as well since it does rely on knowing what his teammates are doing.
I imagine quite a number of interesting cat & mouse games would be played by OCs & DCs once they see the behaviors in action. You'll certainly be able to draw defenders in zone away & setup single coverage ( or possibly blown coverage). But the DC will also be able to counter that by not having to always play man coverage for every potential receiver. I think you'd see much more interesting defenses overall & possibly the return of LBs to the game.
