Being able to write and understand the most basic words however does greatly improve one's chances of being taken seriously and thus improves his conversation skills since people will actually be willing to participate in conversation with said person.
Meh, understanding and reading the dictionary are two different monsters. Although you may know the meaning, it doesn't mean you know how to use it properly...granted some general knowledge will greatly improve conversation skills. I think it's fairly obvious however that WTFPILLOWSHIRT is buy no means attempting to be serious. Everyone knows Germany is a nice place.
the dictionary explains what words mean, if you still dont understand their meaning after reading the dictionary then you have bigger problems than just illiteracy
Not necessarily because commonly foreigners understand meanings but using them in proper sentences isn't as easy.
Which is true because their primary language has completely different grammar and vocabulary.
My argument wasnt about anybody being able to pick up a dictionary of a foreign language and you know that. You're using a chewbacca defense.
FYI i'm a foreigner (not even a US resident) and i seem to do pretty well, now don't I?
