I love the changes, but I really don't understand why the need (or demand) for a special teams only player archetypes? Why would someone what to build them and why not just use the back ups like now? What is their advantage?

Catch, if you get a chance?

I don't mean to be a debbie downer, but Catch can't take personal questions/responses to everyone. He'd have 100+ people lined up at his doorstep.

well Mat, if you won't be a debbie downer, what will debbie do???

You don't have to. You can choose an archetype for your current player when this is implemented.

I meant from the start. For cap building purposes.

They can be. There's no restriction.

Been toying with the "pass blocker" o-line which a lot of people write off as "LOL NO STRENGTH!!11"

Here, just food for thought...

79 agility (level 13), gains to 100
68 blocking (level 20), gains to 85
49 confidence (after a strength cap, level 25), gains to 65
79 strength (level 39), gains to 84
Speed/vision easily 65 attainable, stamina to 50, standard SAs, blah blah

+42 strength with equip = 126 strength

126 strength
100 agility
85 blocking
65 confidence

That's a build that would be very difficult to achieve today, at least as far as the distribution across the majors, and could be wildly successful down the road

8 of those would work

The "Returner" archetype is restricted to HB, WR, and CB.

Ok, I just don't see what the objective is. The OP did say it would lead to more diversity but Catch22 never explained how and to my knowledge no one in this thread has. The only advantage I have heard is that it is easier for GMs to "tag." Not really sure what that means or how much of an improvement this will be. But as a player, I don't see how this will make the game more fun because there already is very little to do. Will this give us more to do other than pick our original archetype? Once we have picked an archetype how will this give us more to do or how will it make the game more fun?

You're still adding the SPs. You have certain ALGs and SAs that you have bonuses to, but you still choose how to build the player. Just because you're building a blocking TE doesn't mean you can't throw some catching in there at some point to really throw off the opposing defenses. And your strength based DE can add some speed to get a sack every once in awhile.

The archetypes allow us to make better players with a more specific goal in mind. But it does not stop you from creating diversity. And, like others, I think it helps. You have these more intelligent ALGs now so that you can focus on something less conventional and still create a successful player.

Sorry jdros... this was a horrible justification. Why even bother with the archetype then?

honestly....I don't know why you would pick it at the moment tbh.

If you were building your own team from scratch where you owned all the players I could definitely see making a backup at each position to be mostly STs and a limited role as a backup for a couple of regular plays. No way I would personally build a special teams unit to jump from team to team throughout my career though, especially when many positions built to perform at their position work just fine on special teams.

late edit: and there is no reason you couldn't still use OLinemen as special teamers if you chose to.

Think of the archetypes as being the focus of the build, not the entire build.

Owned by your own quote.

I suggest you actually wait and try the new system before making a decision. Brash decisions are brash.

Not worried, got plenty of flexies saved. Just don't see why I should keep investing when you never know if you will have a good investment in say oh, six seasons from now. Can you tell me there won't be something NEW coming out that I shouldn't just wait for at that time? I'm saying this because I do have a good team and its in the level it will have to content with the better builds with the archetypes but too leveled up to benefit from converting them. Got stuck in the cap conversions over the past two seasons. Just not in a great mood for more changes at the moment. I just started another team last season and we spent the money to get two teams to insure we started out getting max experience for all. Just more money wasted as you need to have perfects builds to seriously compete. Love the game improving. But can't we see more changing in a single season and not so spread out. So I apologize Catch22 and Mat McBriar for sounding disrespectful. I do love the game, just guys lets put it into a huge upgrade about every four seasons. Let us enjoy the game and have things to look forward to, not just here you guys go next season and next season we'll be doing that. And then we'll do something else next season. Just sounds like brainstorming and implementing. Not organized, thought out and implemented for the betterment of all..
