Nah that was kinda bogus that the WR's did what they did. I've seen that before. What sucks too is when the CB's suddenly stop moving & forget how to defend once they pass the endzone line for a couple ticks

i thought the AI would automatically call a different pass play if in short yard situation and long pass was called by AI.

The sim only uses the primary receiver when gauging when to swap out a play for a more fitting one.
Inside the 20, the sim will not let you run a pass play where the primary receiver runs a route that's 20+ yards.
Inside the 10, the sim will not let you run a pass play where the primary receiver runs a route that's 10+ yards.
The route for the primary receiver on this play (FB) is like 4 yards.
