3 things I know:

1. Whether you spent 3 seconds or a year developing your "clearly correct" COVID philosophy, if a random stranger's rant on a fake football game message board changed your mind, you've got bigger issues to address.

2. Whether you spent 3 seconds or a year developing your "clearly correct" COVID philosophy, if you think your rant on a fake football game message board is going to change a random stranger's mind, you've got bigger issues to address.

3. Many people on this fake football game message board have big issues to address.

Man, the dotball graphics quality on those 1800s computers that predated football must have been...well...pretty much the same I assume.

Daed, I get it, man, but first... you realize you just posted a rant on a fake football game message board in an attempt to change a random stranger's mind about posting rants on fake football game message boards, right?

I'm not trying to change Sithas's mind; I'm not going to. Duh. I'm posting so he knows that his logical fallacies will be responded to. And I'm posting to encourage those of us who do wear masks to keep wearing them, and to tell them, "You're doing the right thing. Keep doing it. Someone's got your back. Don't let guys like this discourage you."

What it all comes down to is that Sithas doesn't want to wear a mask. But if he's the only one not wearing a mask, he'll face a lot of pressure for it. The only way he can get away with not wearing a mask is to convince and encourage other people to refuse to wear masks too, and he'll do or say anything he can get away with to accomplish that goal. So, he took a bunch of legitimate concerns about mask-wearing that are nonetheless easy to solve, and twisted them into reasons to not wear a mask.

His post on its own won't change any minds, and neither will mine. But it's all part of a larger conversation, and people DO make up their minds in the context of that larger conversation. And if the only people talking are the anti-maskers like Sithas and Norse, they'll win the argument over time -- and people will die who otherwise wouldn't. So, people like me should respond.

I've said it before, and I'll gladly say it again: a mask is not a magical virus shield. But wearing a mask does slightly lower your chances of catching COVID-19 if you're exposed to it, and it greatly lowers your chances of spreading COVID-19 if you're an asymptomatic carrier and don't know it. It's not 100% effective, but it improves your odds compared to not wearing a mask.

Remember, people die in car crashes while they're wearing their seat belts too, all the time. That's no reason not to wear a seat belt. A seat belt is not 100% effective in protecting you in a car crash, but it significantly improves your odds compared to not wearing a seat belt.
