crazy thing is it took 2 goalline stops and a dropped pass by a wide open WR for the defending champion to make the tournament.

too bad we had to play before both teams are even ready to go for the season tbh

You're seriously hanging an argument on the semantic difference of a play-in game vs a first round with a lot of byes? Osaka played in the tournament, the first round just isn't part of the bracket competition (because there wouldn't have been enough time for people to enter and still get the tournament completed on time).

They could fix the random seeding issue by going double-elim, or just giving prize to the overall winner, but I don't see any sort of automated seeding mechanism being particularly valuable in preventing lols in the bracket draws. Random is pretty good given the effort it takes to create the bracket.

Seed it based on the NiborRis previous season rankings. When we ran the PWT, we took the time to seed teams based on our rankings, while setting up no inter-conference match ups in the pool play or the first round of the elimination, and as often as possible the second and third round. On top of that, we accommodated specific requests to keep teams that were associated with each other from playing each other early on. On top of that we provided extra content well beyond just the bracket challenge (great idea GLB, where'd you come up with it from?). All of this while paying out of pocket for the tournament. But all in all, who the hell cares about these tourneys anymore. We have one tournament that all the best teams in the game compete for each season, and HHWC has won 3 in a row.

God no. What happens when I get tired of doing that crap? Plus, they're exploitable to some degree and have a bit of lol in them, and most of all, new promotes aren't in there at all.

I remember the PWT work, and it was a TON of work, and the teams were manually seeded. Now remember that there are up to 20 tournaments being run, and at some level they need to all be treated the same, and it's quickly obvious that there isn't enough manpower to do manual seeding and the whole thing becomes unsustainable long-term. The goal is obviously for the whole system to become automated (or at least mostly so) in the very near future.

You could seed on APV, you could seed on last season "performance" (WL by record then Named Pro by record then promoted by record or something like that), but all of those have issues too. Double-elim, once it's automated (so the manual scheduling work for Catch isn't doubled), is probably a fine solution, plus teams get to play until they lose twice, which is a nice side benefit.

Naturally these tournaments have lost a bit of their luster after the WL was created, but I still think the WL was worth it.

I'm not convinced that the play-ins were random. What are the odds that so many established teams got paired up randomly? I think the play-ins were picked, and the idea was to give the little guys more of a chance.

Good game, Odessa. Today reminded me how different it is up here, as I had butterflies in my stomach wondering how the sim was going to turn out. I haven't felt that about GLB in quite a while.
