The play before, he poked Johnson in the neck. The dude is a dirty player....... it is pretty well documented. That is pretty much why people dislike Finnegan. There are still alot of people who want to view the NFL as a "professional" sport where the athletes conduct themselves as professionals (despite the thug mentality that runs rampant in our society these days).

if he poked you, maybe you'd have a legit reason to be mad . otherwise, i think that's hilarious. i think poking somebody in the neck is a far cry from 'thug' but that term gets bandied around a lot in reference to black athletes....which is just swell i guess. (this is more a reference to sportswriters and bloggers)

regardless, johnson should've hit him, he did, and overall it was pretty reasonable...but if ur the NFL you really have to suspend them. gg goodell

Don't think I disagree with this, but TBH since Johnson has never really been in any trouble at all in his pro career, and Finnegan is constantly under the spotlight, it should be a 1 game for AJ and 4 for Finnegoon.

you could justify lots of different combos. ultimately, johnson's the only one who threw punches though. i do think history of behavior comes into play....but johnson, while purportedly a great guy (dunno, never met him) has had some on-field fines before -- finnegan's probably worse though in that respect.

Not to derail a thread, but pretty much anything that celebrates stupidity (ie, supposedly college educated individuals speaking like illiterates...... pretty good example.) To me, a "thug mentality" is the difference between playing fair within the rules (not just in football) or trying to win at any and all costs with really no regards to fairness or rules. Another example might be when a dude & his homies are out drinking, and one of them talks shit to a bigger dude....... the bigger dude might beat the tar out of the mouth of the group M2M, but when his 3 homeboys jump into the fight they pretty much become the "thugs" in question.

So, "over-used" or just a douche-bag mentality enveloping our society so much that it is brought up at every turn? You make the call......

I do think that it was good that AJ whooped the dude,because antagonist deserve what they get, but at the same time it was an impulsive action that warranted a suspension.Phillip Rivers is just like Finnegan as far as disrespectful jaw-jacking goes, is it alright that a DE gets frustrated, rips his helmet off then goes to town on his melon w/o any suspension? 1 game suspension for each player the next matchup imo.

Eh it's kind of hard to separate between thug behavior on the field and just being jacked up on adrenaline and not thinking straight in the heat of the moment. I know I've had a few moments like that before. When you get cheap shoted you get heated plain and simple. I'm sure we all have a little "thug" in us at that point.

Now on to the grammar / Ebonics comment. A lot of these guys only got into college because of their athletic ability. The majority came up from hard back grounds in the inner cities. When everyone around you speaks a certain way you tend to as well. Why do you think there are accents depending on what part of the country you’re from? To me all people from Boston sound like idiots with that accent. Doesn’t mean they are!

I know football is a sport and all but don’t forget the primary reason it exists is to entertain people. Now you can’t deny that this fight was not entertaining!
