i guess that means plow is inferior, since he's only breaking a tackle 75% of the time in regular season games.

You could do it if you treated each phase as a 'play.'

At the end of each phase, save the position and vector of each dot, and start a new play with that information.

I think basketball would be doable, but the players would have to have a lot more accurate awareness of the ball and clock management. Line changes would be a nightmare for hockey. It might actually be refreshing to see basketball and have a sim where players have to be coded to keep going for a long time without stopping. The football sim has too many artificial things that only work because there's a line of scrimmage, there is a hacky distinction between pass/run plays, and defense is typically just chasing guys rather than trying to stay in front of them. The nature of the game would force the sim to work on being more fluid.

basketball will never work. Hell, video games with a ton of professionals working on it still are struggling 15 years later. So so hard. There's way too much subtlety and no individual matchups or "rolls" really.

Same could have been said about Football, yet we are here?

You can say the same thing about football games really. EA has been working on Madden and NCAA forever but their AI is still awful. The plays are only somewhat balanced if humans are controlling them. If you set a game to play CPU vs CPU it is awful, runners don't know where to go, blocking interactions are terribad, defensive pursuit angles are dumb, passing game is about the same as GLB.

I still think basketball is a lot more complicated to work especially with all the fouls

Well, i think it can be done but it'd have to be rather crude. I'm also thinking about it in terms of equipment/VA/SA/aeq and little add ons and how delicate the sim would be anyways. I think football/baseball will be a bit easier to work with
