I am partial to USC-Notre Dame.

But even the lesser known ones are just as good.

Montana vs. Montana State is one of the best rivalries around.
TCU vs. SMU used to be a brawl
Purdue vs. Indiana is a great game.
Raiders vs. Chargers but that is mostly hate
Cardinals vs. Winning again that is just based of Hate

Part of what makes OSU v Michigan great...

"Woody was famous for his hatred for Michigan and anything that had to do with the state (he referred to it, of course, as "that state up north" or "that team up north") . One night on a recruiting trip in the state of Michigan, an assistant noticed that the car he was driving was going to run out of gas. He let Woody, who was dozing in the passenger seat, know that he had to pull over for gas. Woody refused, and the assistant drove on. The assistant, who saw the weather was starting to get bad, began to become worried about getting stuck in the middle of nowhere, and once again stressed his desire to pull over and get gas. Woody erupted: "No, goddammit! We do NOT pull in and fill up. And I'll tell you exactly why we don't. It's because I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan! We'll coast and PUSH this goddam car to the Ohio line before I give this state a nickel of my money!" The assistant knew he wasn't kidding, and they barely made it across the border and sputtered into the first gas station they found in Ohio."

Iron Bowl= top 5 rivalry in all of sports

By far larger:

Red Sox-Yankees
Lakers-Celtics
Redskins-Cowboys
Maple Leafs-Canadiens
Carolina-Duke
Michigan-Ohio State

Iron bowl probably makes the top 5 college football rivalries. It's behind Michigan-Ohio State, Oklahoma-Texas, Army-Navy, and Harvard-Yale for sure. The latter two are probably the biggest 2 rivalries in college football; they're such huge rivalries that people watch the games year-in and year-out even though the teams involved are absolutely terrible (unlike other rivalries that get viewership not just from the rivalry but also from having good teams involved most years).

Alabama-Auburn is on par with USC-Notre Dame, Florida State-Miami, and Florida-Georgia. I probably put it ahead of FSU-Miami and Florida-Georgia, tied for the 5th-biggest college football rivalry with USC-Notre Dame.

The Iron Bowl suffers for the same reason Florida-Georgia suffers; it's a _huge_ deal for Bama (and Florida), but for the other two teams Auburn-Georgia is almost as big. Tough to call it one of the top 5 rivalries in sports when for half the fan base of one team it's not even the top rivalry for your home team.

EDIT: To re-phrase, there are certain rivalries that will make people who don't even watch the sport in question tune in. Non-baseball fans are drawn in by Sox-Yanks (esp. 2004). Non-college football fans watch Army-Navy. Non-college basketball fans watch UNC-Duke. Likewise Cowboys-Redskins and Lakers-Celtics. We've seen it with Ali-Frazier, Sampras-Agassi, Harvard-Yale, certainly in days gone by Nicklaus-Palmer, McEnroe-Conners, USA-Russia, and Kerrigan-Harding.

Auburn-Bama isn't anywhere near that level; it's a big rivalry within the sport, but (outside of the home areas for the 2 teams) it doesn't make people who aren't college football fans watch.

and u obviously know nothing about the iron bowl, its a rivalry that seperates families. and fyi, no auburn fan hates georgia more than alabama, the alabama auburn rivalry is the end all beat all game in the state of alabama. the rivalry is year round reguardless of if its football season or not, thats what makes it 1 of the greats (like UM and OSU

Gotta agree with that. As a resident of Alabama and a impartial observer, the Alabama - Auburn rivalry is great one.

Would also like to make a shout out for the Backyard Brawl, WVU vs. Pitt. Longstanding rivalry with fierce competition. Doesn't matter who is better or worse, throw the record out the door.

There are dozens of rivalries that separate families. Every serious one thinks they're the biggest ever. You think Carolina-Duke doesn't separate families?

There are a few, though, that get national coverage and draw in viewers that don't otherwise watch the sport. Bama-Auburn isn't remotely close to that. It's an enormous regional rivalry, and certainly one of the top 50 rivalries in sports. But as far as national impact, Michigan-OSU, Harvard-Yale, Army-Navy, and USC-Notre Dame are all much bigger--and when you step outside of the small world of college football, I already named a lot of much bigger rivalries.

It's really easy to get caught up in the local intensity. But "biggest rivalry in sports" has to mean more than just local impact, and if you think Bama-Auburn has anything like the traction that Red Sox-Yankees, Redskins-Cowboys, or a few others do outside the home areas, you're living in a very localized dream world.

EDIT: Really, it's not even a debate worth having. If you think Auburn-Bama is anywhere near the top rivalry in sports then you're both vastly overrating the place of college football in sports (even if you are of the opinion that golf, NASCAR, tennis, the Olympics, and a host of other things aren't "real sports", the NFL, NBA, MLB, and March Madness all draw far more viewers and interest than any college football game) and the importance of that game relative to things like Michigan-OSU, Army-Navy, etc that draw much larger national crowds.

Auburn-Bama is huge for the people who have a rooting interest, but a lot of rivalries are. Claiming it's anywhere near the biggest rivalry in sports shows an appalling lack of objectivity.
