Glad to see the efforts of several Pro League champions to put together an inter-regional tournament is coming to some sort of fruition this season. Most observers probably won't appreciate just how hard it has been to convince championship teams to dedicate the time to compete outside their own regions, as well as put their reputations on the line in a tournament that offers no formal reward. There were still a couple of cases where other regional representatives were needed (for example, where defending Pro League champs have been gutted).

Thanks to all the those who are participating, and a special thanks to the guys who put in the time to organize it! I'm excited to see how this turns out and hope it becomes a continuing GLB tradition.

It's probably tough because it's so useless.

My personal belief (not to be interpreted as being that of the teams that are actually working hard at making this work) is that these two posts do an excellent job of summarizing the journey to making this concept a reality.

On the one hand, you have the owners/gm's of 8 teams that represent regions of teams that arguably contain some of the best and most dedicated agents in the game, trying to do something to mitigate the slowness and boredom that is becoming more prevalent in the game. Perhaps that is just my perception, as my time to play is limited by real life and I don't keep up with the "politics" of the game. But I bet dollars to doughnuts you will find a growing sentiment amongst agents and owners that something needs to be done to stimulate interest in the game, and prevent agents from just dropping out of the game completely.

In his post, Painmaker points out that it was no small effort to get some teams to participate in the concept. Instead of a response that acknowledges the work these teams (and their regions) are doing, the response from Vanilla Thunder, a moderator and perceived administrator of the game (don't know the hierarchy, only expressing my observation) is that the concept is "...probably tough because it's so useless."

As others have pointed out, there have been other attempts to make this work and get it integrated into the game, and I am now starting to understand why the frustration amongst other agents and owners is growing. Personally, I view the fact that this has been attempted multiple times by various owners/agents, indicates a feature like this would be a cool addition to the simulation, and would help maintain long-term interest in the game. The perception this response gives is one that the game admins simply don't care what owners/players want.

It's one thing to say that there is a lot of infrastructure work and changes to the game that need to be done before working on some type of World Cup concept. It is something entirely different to just dismiss the hard work and efforts of these owners and teams as "useless". Way to encourage owners and agents to spend time thinking of creative ideas to generate continued interest in the game.

Nicely done.

Best post so far. There are obviously a lot of challenges to be overcome with this idea. All of which, really, could be solved by bort accepting that this is something that everyone would actually want, and work for, if he made it an official part of the game. With real prizes, like FPs, to go along with trophies displayed on the home pages.
The only ones that really stand to lose anything here are those teams (ahem, USAPRO) who have always been convinced of their superiority.
Outstanding effort on the part of all of those involved. And kudos to the teams who actually accepted the challenge!

That being said... Go BENITOS! Roit on their asses!!!

well said, except for the caveat that the moderators have about as much power to actually implement something as you, me, or Donald Duck.

However, it's still a pretty idiotic thing for a site moderator to say. It causes absolutely no harm, and it creates SOME level of enthusiasm for the site users. If you don't have anything nice to say about it, either don't say anything at all, or at least have the sense to put one of those "the views expressed in this post are only those of the poster and do not necessarily reflect... *blah blah blah, you know the rest*" disclaimers in there.

Like I have said, great idea, but change name to GOALLINEBLITZ BOWL I.

Why not rename it after the most watched sporting event? Maybe we can make money for commercials like the Superbowl.

Yeah, I noticed that comment as well. It seemed pretty unprofessional to me.

I think you miss the point. It's not that people's efforts are poor. I can only imagine how tough it is to get something like this together.

The point is that at this stage, the game isn't something worth really measuring. What are you really trying to find out? Which team has the biggest exploit at DE? Or which team can run the Dime defense the most?

The game is moving in the right direction, and right now, it's about 1000% better then at Day 0 and getting better every day. So people should be excited about the direction of the game, but people acting like these "WORLD TOURNAMENTS" are worth anything are just being silly.

EDIT: In spite of all that, I would like to see this get going, if only for next year, when the new Gutted fix starts working and leagues are a little more competitive. Then again in later seasons, when the game is working properly.

Yetis Capture First Game in GLB World Cup Play

After seasons of planning and weeks of preparation, the first of 4 first round matches kicked off in the early hours today, as the Canadian Pro Champion Arctic Bay Yetis hosted the USA Pro League San Antonio Saints at a jam-packed, sold out Frozen Tundra Stadium in front of 72,000+ screaming fans. And both teams played to the championship caliber the represent in GLB play, with the Yetis squeezing by the Saints 36-24 to claim the inaugural North American Cup in GLB World Cup play, aided by cheers of "Corn Head" throughout the game.

Led by SIX sacks from DE Corn Head, averaging 5 yards each, the Yeti defense leveled a total of 9 sacks for the game when LB Moe Biggsley added 3 sacks of his own. "Man, let me tell you how sweet "The Corn" is on this team" said Yeti owner MiniHusk. "I remember a rookie coming in last season and messing his name up, calling him Chowder Head. The Corn took 2 weeks to pick all the remains out of his teeth, and I had to fill a roster spot fast!". The rest of the Yeti defense added an INT and 2 hurries, along with 6 pass deflections.

But even in the face of the staunch Yeti defense, Saints QB Pretty Boy still managed to throw three TD tosses to three different WR's, his favorite target being T.O. Moss who averaged 18 yards a catch on 201 yards, slicing and dicing his way through the Yeti secondary. The O-line on both sides of the ball held up their end of the bargain, minus the sacks, and this game represented the level of competition GLB World Cup organizers were looking for. "We really worked hard to represent the USA Pro League with the respect their deserve. We can look anyone straight in the eye and say, we showed up, and represented" said Saints owner hud. His team was filling in when the champions declined their invitation due to conflicting times with their team pedicurist.

First round games in the Inaugural GLB World Cup continue on 10/6 and 10/7. Schedule for the second round games will be provided as soon as it is set.

With bort's ignoration about the champions tournament suggest and the pleads for a world championship, this is a great start and even though it is completely flawed and not really worth anything, it will be fun as hell to see and frankly I like the idea. It's the best we can do, and it's a start, which is what we need.

Go Benitos!!

Vanilla,

Thanks for taking the time to acknowledge the hard works these folks are doing. It is encouraging to see positive interactions on these boards, and the prospect of discourse with content and substance bodes well.

While we disagree on whether or not this is useless, I respect your opinion, not that you know me from Adam to give it. Perhaps a good debate when all is done with the Inaugural GLB World Cup will help make the second version that much better!

Ouch! You hit the nail on the head...I hit my thumb.

Fun is the key to success in most anything, and while the debate rages on as to whether or not the Inaugural GLB World Cup means anything from a technical standpoint, it sure looks to me like it is making things a whole lot of fun for the agents and their players. Heck, even some of the spew coming from folks on other boards (*cough* Canada Pro) is just plain funny stuff!
