Just my 2 centavos here but in every American-style Football game out there (yes... there are other styles of "football/futbol games in the world), from middle school up to the NFL, every time one team causes the other a "safety" that team also gets the ball somehow, someway... whether it's by punt, pass, kickoff, or simply a predetermined position of the field of play. In the NFL (and, I think, College also) you get a choice of punting OR kicking off. For the longest time I never understood why PUNT was the choice defacto until a wily ol' coach explained it to me this way; "Yeah, a kickoff travels farther than a punt... but a punt stays in the air longer and therefore allows you better coverage and usually limits the return yardage better."
In the interest of simplicity, I wouldn't (if/when this issue is fixed/addressed) make it a choice... just make it a punt. But I wouldn't begrudge things if it was a choice. Still, this (loss of possession of the ball after giving up a safety)... being universally accepted as THE RULE of the sport... really needs to belong here as well.
