I've gone to two different places and it's been completely different experiences. At the university I was at first, I lived on campus and it was quite easy to network and get to know people.
Where I am now, it's a college where the majority of the population is local - and I commute in. I basically only know the people in my class(of about 20) and there is a definite difference in the quality of student-run activities through the student government(which is a basically a waste of fees for me). So it really entirely depends on whether you live on campus or commute, and the 'community' of the college/university you're at. (I know in the States you don't quite distinguish the terms the same as we do in Canada... University is the one that traditionally grants degrees, while Colleges are more traditionally vocational schools. The specific school I'm at is technically a Polytech now, so it'd be similar in nature to the xITs(M/R/C), though not quite on the same level of reputation at this point for that area).
