well, I'm not a smart man, but b might be better

real excellent summation. all we're trying to do here really is to explain why people with high catching, like way-too-high-catching, are still seeing similiar drop numbers to people with 20 catching. the 'bubble' theory certainly explains it and sure makes a lot of sense when looking at replays as well. whether its true or not is something else entirely, but if nothing else i think its safe to say "dont raise catching with the sole purpose of reducing drops".

I have another "theory" for this. Not sure how true it may be, but it seems that for the most part Bort has set the skills to all interact with each other. The most recent example is the speed/agility. It seems that whenever someone puts a ton into one skill, there may be a little improvement, but nothing significant. So the theory is that if you do pour a lot into catching, you would also have to maintain a certain level into other skills. Going back to the equation.....(catching+vision+agility+conf.+.......) If that were the major part of the equation(I know it is a horrible example) could there also be a small penalty applied for getting the equation to far out of whack one way or the other. So
IF blah blah is greater then blah blah by more than 50%
then %of completing catch lowers by Blah blah 20% of the time

Something like that...again I know its a horrible example.

My player of a similar experimentation.
Catching soft-capped.
Next: vision.

I can almost guarantee your bad agility/speed having you not get open is why your dropping 41% of your passes... There are a crapload of players up to level 16 with less catching who don't come close to dropping 41%...

I really want someone to make a wideout with 60+ agility 60+ catch 40+ vision and less than 20 speed

That's funny, I really want to make a wideout with 60 agility, 60 catching, 60 vision, and 60 speed.

edit: at level 10

Bort has said that the catching ability is not only for getting more passes it is more or so a question of having soft hands. By that he meant that a higher catching score gives you a better chance to catch balls in stride. Thus not stopping to catch and then having to accelerate to run and get some YAC.

So the higher the catching the better you catch on the move.

Simple answer - does Catching help you catch? Yes.

WRs who catch almost every ball in traffic seem to have a higher catching in my experience. Of course they have MANY other attributes that seem to help also. They may also have a QB that is God's gift to GLB throwing them the ball. They may also get a great matchup with the worst CB on the other team or a good CB that may have been on the field too long.

Here is what I have interpreted over reading thru this forum for as long as its been here.
Some are chiseled in stone by Bort, Some are what most people think, some seem like common sense (to me).

Skills pertaining to WRs getting open:
Speed - top speed a player can go
Agility - determines how long it takes to get to top speed and blow past CBs
Agility - enables many SAs to cut/freeze/juke a CB to get you open
Jumping - if the ball is thrown too high this may help?
Strength - ability to push off the CB?
Vision - ability to find open areas to get to?

Skills pertaining to WRs catching:
Strength - determines ability to beat a CB to the ball and secure it from him - stop PDs?
Jumping - ability to get up in the air to try to catch a ball
Catching - the catching sphere around a player, securing ball faster?
Vision - ability to see the ball in the air and adjust to it?

Skills pertaining to WRs after catch:
Strength - to break tackles and hold onto ball
Speed with adequate Agility - to pull away quickly from tacklers
Agility - enables many evasive SA maneuvers
Jumping - maybe to keep you from being shoestring tackled?
Carrying - to secure ball away and maybe help break tackles
Vision - to find open space to run to?

General WR skills:
Confidence - lets you get over BAD plays quicker - one drop can ruin the whole game for a low Confidence WR
Stamina - keeps you on the field longer and allows you to play better longer
Blocking - determines the time you can hold a block

Of course how to make ALL of these work ALL of the time is the trick.

You have to be able to try get open, Catch what is thrown to you without it being knocked down by the CB, then not fumble after you catch it, then run as far as you can until you are tackled or you score. All the while SAs are kicking on and off at certain times. Good luck.

Nope.

It's a slow build.

Just take a look at the thread. I'm only keeping people up to date.

Catching is just like any other stat, you need to compliment it with other skills. Speed with agility, throwing with strength and vision, so on.
