I would suspect you would have a choice as to whether to select 4 majors and 3 minors vs 3 majors and 4 minors. Why someone would choose that is known only to them. I have lots of ideas... some like Banes' about building punters/kickers (I would love to have my punter be more than just a damn foot on the field. Speed, tackling, and agility at LEAST as minors and maybe one as a major although I disagree with strength... need that to KO the returner and knock loose the ball.) Things is, just having the ability to swap majors for minors or choose a skill NOT listed as either is something I would really enjoy. Sure... some old mullet heads would simply build the same ol' same ol' just as they drink the same beer they always have for decades. But many of us would love a shot at seeing what else can be done... or what else can be tried.
BTW... if we WERE allowed to change/exchange majors and minors then we also should be able to change the SA trees as well. Since some SA's are tied to specific skill sets. It's like we've been given Lincoln Logs as dot building kits. Neat and for a while... but limited in what you can do. I wanna see Erector sets for building dots kits. Lemme go crazy... get stupid... dream big and f*ck things up. It's my money I'm paying for this game and, if this is a consumer demand, then it'd be not so smart to chase the dollar here.

Lots of good suggestions being made. If I could reiterate what I originally said, I made TWO suggestions. I say that because most comments are focusing on just the one (let us choose major/minors) and keep the system (4 majors/3 minors, 3/4, 4/4, etc). The second suggestion was just give people 2 points in majors and 1 in minors and let them pick how many in each (i.e. 2 majors, 1 pt each; 3 majors .66 each; 6 majors .33 each).

The problem with changing the total number of majors/minors on a dot (instead of simply being able to assign WHICH skills are majors/minors) is the skills are linked to the SA's and SA TREES. If you make major changes to the majors and minors, then you would also need to change (or be able to change) the SA TREES. I would suspect, without such, bugs and exploits would be a major issue. For what it's worth, even if we couldn't change/exchange majors and minor skills, I think being able to select our own SA's for creating our own SA trees would be a step forward anyways.
