Performance kinda sucks, but it isn't due to confidence.

How did you do on third down compared to other downs? Bort has said it's important then.

:snort:

This is an argument that has gone on for about 35 seasons...wtf does confidence do for you, and is it worth anything?

Here are some of my best dots, along with their confidence attribute:

Oscar Balbuena http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=531433

Confidence 63.94

Those who played against him in WL remember him as a serious terror on the inside. When weight-gate destroyed the careers of Need Ur Love and Leon Lett, Oscar just got more dominant. And he was a menace on third/4th down.
He was, without question, the key to the first generation MPHD defense, which was well known as a dominant force in WL (and the only defense to ever grind the mighty Valhalla offense to a halt).

Johnny Tso http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=531331

Confidence 68

A great powerback in his day and still pretty high on the all-time HB HoF list. (also an inductee of the defunct player- voted HoF).
He was no Jedi Knight, but he was pretty good, and he was clutch as hell.

Grimbald Gorehound http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=513540

Confidence 60.54 (+ Special Teamer)

One of the very first STOPs, Grimbald was was FF machine. He and his buddies turned the tide of many games with timely turnovers.

Spleefy McSmokalot http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=1172411

Conf 54.69

Spleefy was a third down specialist and was damn near unstoppable with the right QB and OC (bhall). He pretty much singlehandedly beat MPHD in the season 20 CCG with 16 catches for 216 yards, and went on to help ESL claim the WL Gold.

Louie the Roach http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=1307195

Conf 58.84

This guy was the the piece that really drove the Season 19-23 MPHD squad offense. He was an early version of the reasonably fast break-tackle WR with carrying/Spin skills and he was a serious menace on screens and crossing patterns.

General Senggelinqin http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=1309759

Conf 51.96

The lynchpin of the S19-23 MPHD defense, and almost certainly the best DE of his generation. He was a sack machine as well as runstopping force on the weakside.

Darius Protege http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=2162313

Conf 82.86

A tremendous passer who kept bad throws under control in an era where that was tough to do. Still high on the all-time HoF list.

Fibular Tibia http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=2162330

Conf 69.1

A serious threat to the inside and outside, one of the early "combo-powerback" types with a lot of spin, juke and very high carrying.

Slappy Chowhound http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=2162403

Conf 50

One of the top TEs of his generation and a top 10 all-time HoF dot.

Poorly Conceived http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=2162502

Conf 51

Probably the greatest DE of the S28-31 generation in which he played. One of the early "triple threat" DEs with high stats in speed/str/agi and nothing over the top in any one particular attribute.

Udder Milkbone http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=2162567

Conf 51.26

One of the best CBs from the S28-31 MPHD team that had a pretty ferocious pass defense. Wasn't dedicated to anyone one task, but came up with clutch KLs, lots of PDs, and was critical to stopping the outside runs.

Snooky Balboa http://goallineblitz.com/game/player.pl?player_id=2207027

Conf 54.5

This guy was about as unstoppable as the game could/should allow on third downs, especially late in the game. Probably the best slot WR of his generation, certainly in the top 2.

Keep in mind that ~50 is about as low as I go for conf on most dots. I have indeed tried to build a few dots that really pushed primary attributes higher at the expense of confidence...but I hated them all.

At the end of the day, I think confidence matters...a little bit. I "see it" (or can fool myself into seeing it) on third/fourth downs, inside the redzone, and in the final 2 minutes of a half or 4th quarter.

But other attributes matter more, and there's just no doubt about that.

Having high (or at least not tanked) confidence is a great way to round out a build...but it will never make you a great dot on it's own.

And there are tons of dots that have done great things with shitty confidence.

I will say this however: Most of the folks who complain the loudest about "morale spirals" are the same folks scarping by with shitty confidence. Take that as you will.

On the other hand, watching the morale bars of your dots shows that the difference on morale between dots with 50 confidence and 70 confidence can be surprisingly small.

Can perhaps confidence help you play better when your morale is low? Who knows.

Is one 1 point of confidence worth 1 point of spd/agi/str? Not even close. Is 10 points of confidence worth 1 point of spd/agi/str?

I would say that once your spd/agi/str (or whatever) get to a certain level...then yeah, 10 points of Conf is probably something near an equitable value, when considered over the course of a season. But rarely (or never) will you see one "big play" where you can unequivocally say "Confidence Baby!!"

The way you should have taken it is that people like me have realized the fact that confidence doesn't do anything about preventing morale spirals, so we questioned the point of having the confidence attribute at all. Morale spirals are a product of how turnovers have been coded, and confidence's ability to mitigate sim-produced morale effects has been proven to be minimal at best. Confidence may indeed have other small benefits in play to play rolls, but it doesn't do what it was advertised to do for morale, aside from resisting morale-killing SAs like Aura of Intimidation. Regarding its other speculated qualities, Catch22 had Sabataged run tests on confidence for QBs only to find a minimal difference between 100 confidence and 50 confidence. Even though Bort wants confidence to be important, the only evidence we have suggests that it doesn't do much.

There wasn't really a difference between 60 confidence and 140 confidence on a QB. That was my test.
