34 deflections in a season seems sexy, until you notice that only 4 came in competitive games, and zero were in games that could determine the fate of the season.
Pass-Deflect D-line builds aren't worth what you give up in run stuffing ability. At 6'8", you'll get blowed off the line, and the best teams will trade the off-chance you'll deflect a pass (that a CB might have deflected or picked off anyhow) for the ability to average an extra YPC or more in your direction.
Tried Bull-Rushing and Evasive style builds from DE and DT. Niether made a big difference on deflections, and both get owned in the running game.140str or nearly 160str, you're gonna get blown off the ball if you're guy is 6'8", and you're gonna average about 1 deflection a game over thier pro career, fewer than half of which will be in games of relevance.
I've never had a pass deflecting DE, but did have a pass deflecting DT. It worked best with less speed, also functioned well even against WL passing. It also had more agility & vision, plus stacked VAs much different.
I tried all sorts of VA combos. They started off without any techman and -10agi/+10str on power rushing. I'd considered the path you're saying worked, with lower speed higher agi/vis. Looks like I guess wrong on the key attributes. My line of thinking was the additional speed would assist in closing the gap to the passer to get you in better position to be close enough to bat the ball while it was coming out of his hand.
