the design was originally intended for use with water, just flooding the shafts with water to drown entire waves of gobs, with a lever to open a hatch at the bottom to drain the water after the drowning

but lava makes everything better

i also, a few forts back, had a super dwarf

like, he used a longsword, battle axe, war hammer, mace, spear, flail, and a dagger, as well as a shield, all at the same time

he had something like 500 gob kills, as well as a hundred trolls or something

he was the only one i even had in my military, i just sent him outside the walls whenever a siege came, then shut the walls behind him

another particularly amusing fort I had awhile back was an attempt to desensitize the entire populace

i had the only entrance to my fort being a 1 tile wide bridge, covered in traps that tricked gobs into dodging off the bridge. Outside of the bridge, was a 30 story drop on either side.

At the bottom I had rows of iron spikes sticking up from the ground, surrounded by glass windows...surrounding the windows, i had my dining room set up where all of my dwarves ate all of their meals

then i also had the rows of spikes designed as a sacrificial chamber, where i would send unwanted children in then have a dwarf repeatedly pull a lever that would make the spikes repeatedly retract then shoot out, turning the previously unwanted child into an indistinguishable lump of meat and blood

granted, you also have to lock the doors of the sacrificial chamber or other well meaning citizens will quickly find themselves included in the lump of meat

My last fort had an amazing way of dealing with gobs though

I embarked right next to a volcano, and made it so the only way in was a 50 story staircase down the outer ring of the volcano, followed by a 45 story staircase back near the top.

After the 45 story staircase, I had a pressure plate that opened a hatch above both staircases, quickly dropping a load of magma down each shaft, and a grate at the bottom for the magma to go through.

It essentially acted like a flash melt on entire waves of gobs, aside from the dick that set off the pressure plate. And it collected all of the loot at the bottom.

And it had smoke stacks on top of the staircases for the smoke of burning gob flesh

it was glorious

on the plus side, it also serves as a way to dispose of any gobs that somehow happen to survive a 30 story drop onto rows of iron spikes

I play it every few months to try out the additions from new versions of mods and whatnot

it quickly becomes...i dunno...pointless? Once you play with all the things from various mods, the only thing left is building giant penises out of diamond blocks, and that just gets old after the first few times

new thuamcraft is fun and at the same time not as fun. The researching is WAY fucking better, golems are cool...but no more seals, and no more liquid vis make me sad

its not a lack of hardcore things thats missing...its just...i dont know

one of my main gripes is the lack of suitable lightning, or a way to prevent shit from spawning.

it's essentially legos, but building large structures is discouraged because you need to put torches fucking everywhere, otherwise creepers spawn and blow up everyything
