Plenty they could've done before this... like buying or renewing the domain name before it expired, or setting up their own copies of the information and moving it to the new Wiki site.

Domain names expire. Everyone on the web knows this. Somebody on the GLB staff should've seen this coming ahead of time and taken steps ahead of time to avoid it.

Never should've gotten to this point in the first place. I understand their options are limited now, but they weren't limited 3 months ago. Or 6 months ago. Or a year ago. That's when they should've acted, not now.

Let me clarify that a) the admins did communicate with Hikariu (an old GLB user no longer playing the game who was trying to make some money off the site) in the past and b) buying the domain doesn't magically grant you the contents of the old site. GLB would have had to buy the site from Hikariu or have him agree to hand it over. And of course Hikariu would be sitting in the power position the whole way.

On the other hand, having the site actually be responsible for their own content and making sure that it was kept on their own domain was never a priority.

There's ways to buy an entire site, not just the domain name itself, so don't split hairs with me on that. And if Hikariu wasn't a willing seller, GLB should've been already working on ways to recreate the content from the old site and move it to the new site. Stuff like the Q&A Archives is all information from GLB's own forums anyway... Hikariu just copied, pasted, and organized it.

These are the sorts of small details that GLB repeatedly drops the ball on, time and time again.

To be fair, it was a priority... that's why they set up an official Wiki on GLB's own site once it became clear the old Wiki was no longer being maintained.

Well we're clearly going to split hairs here because you'd buy the entire site or the data from Hikariu. It's not just a product of buying/renewing the domain with the domain seller or old host. And of course GLB had worked on ways to convert content from the old site to the new one. That's a lot of what you see on the wiki.goallineblitz.com site. That was the original interaction between GLB admins and Hikariu (from what I know). There was the copy over and then the huge 'GLB manual' project of bozkg's that got integrated in. The Q&A was really the only thing that didn't get copied over.

IIRC it was more of a hassle and time spend for Bort than the other stuff. It didn't get moved over on opportunity cost.

That being said, obviously the downtime for the Q&A resource isn't ideal. I wholeheartedly agree that it would have been better for GLB to assume control with an in-house Wiki long ago. Using the old GLBWiki site was taking it for granted.

That's okay, anytime someone needs the Wiki information just paste a link to the Go daddy homepage.

hey just think back in the old days we would have to wait for someone to update Bortstalker thread or wait for someone that had the exact quote from Bort to pop into a thread just to know how it went.
