Frankly, he wasnt all that special, he was a product of the game's first STOP unit, no one had an answer, and they ate people up. He also was not a returner with that unit for much of his career. I had another guy that had 200 + TD as well with them. When he got to the WL, the reserves playing special teams at the time could actually keep up and neutralized him.

He never eyepopping KR TD numbers though, he was a designed punt returner. 337 PR TD, only 26KR. I have never built any guy fast enough to be a good KR.


Speed isn't the key, it is SAs. Open field fake, juke, head fake, spin, return specialist, and quick cut.

That and enough carrying/agility to trigger them all. My top guy only ever had 147 speed at the top of his game.

It doesn't help when your returner is swarmed all the time... really helps you turn those 12 yard gains into TDs though. Once you break the first group of dots, you can usually fake out the next couple to open the lane.

this was the guy xeef had on my team back in the day. i dunno if that's the most but his entire ST setup was pretty game changing at the time ..

+1. My guy is similar, 145 speed and high on the carrying/SAs. IMO, everyone wants TDs, but it's the responsibility of the returner to make sure they have a shot at beating the first defender. Because that's what's going to happen on a large percentage of returns... you're facing a completely unblocked defender or two, and then tons of running room before the rest of the pack. This happens SO much more often than a magical combinations of blocks that occur for a split second allowing someone with around 170 speed to get there in time to make them pay off.

That being said, getting speed to 100 base takes literally no effort nowdays. 155 speed would be nice and the same break/fake effectiveness could certainly be achieved by sacrificing other things.

Damn, I didn't realize how few KR TDs I've had. I dug through my retired returners and my most was 21 with second being one of my active dots ( http://goallineblitz.com/game/player_awards.pl?player_id=2505369 ) at 19 (he's currently 19th all-time special teams TE/FB).
