Forum > Suggestions > Dramatically Increase the Chance that the MVP will get the Gear
To those -1ing, what is the point of the MVP? What does an MVP mean? Why does it carry a benefit and a bonus piece of eq in addition to the award itself? Ask yourself that question. Because if what you want is to just throw the best 10 or so players at a position into a hat, draw a name out and give that person a sweet piece of gear that is fine, maybe that's an idea you are in favor of, and maybe it's a decent idea, but that's has very little to do with why an MVP exists or why gear is attached to it in the first place.
An MVP is for the most valuable player/best player in a particular league. We ALREADY have algorithms in place to discount stats gained against gutted teams. Why should a team be penalized for using their best player a lot? That is what teams are SUPPOSED to do. So Peyton Manning should never win the MVP because the Colts used to pass a lot. Why is that fair when so many other teams are running so much and the Colts only pass? Not to mention that on GLB as you go higher, it becomes less and less possible for a team to be successful when they try to focus too much on one player.
In short, if the formula needs to be updated or corrected, then let's do it. The stat whoring that happened in the first place that led to this was WL teams purposefully coming up with gimic defenses where for example 11 players covered one guy and the other 4 were uncovered. This was done by teams colluding with each other and we already have ways of dealing with this that have nothing to do with the MVP formula. If a team obviously does this they are punished. If it's not obvious then it's not that bad or extraordinary and it probably has very little significant impact on the MVP. That is my two cents on it.

Not sure what your rant is about tbh
Punished for using their best player? What the hell does that have to do with the MVP endorsement itself? Are you suggesting that using a player decreases their MVP ranking?
It's like a half rant about the MVP formula itself and another paragraph summarizing the previous paragraph.
And Halifax has nothing to do with why the system is the way it is.

Using your best player too much is stat whoring. That is the relevance. Both the 70 point rule and the rule where the MVP doesn't automatically get the gear came out of that Halifax game and directly. Their players were disqualified for the MVP that season and we (bort and the mods at the time) began immediately discussing how to prevent that from happening again and both rules resulted from it directly.
My rant had a simple and direct point. If we are going to have an MVP then lets make a good formula and have an MVP and then reward him for being MVP. If we are going to throw 5 above average players into a pool each season and randomly pick one to win a nice piece of eq, then that is not really an MVP and maybe you like the idea, but I think it's silly.
And yes my HB won MVP. My K on that team won one the season before and my KR the season before that. Of course the formula is wonky. That HB is not even the best on that team, in fact there are two better than him. But TDs are weighted very heavily just as FFs are for defense.
This does not change my point which is that if we are going to have an MVP let's have one and if we are going to have a random eq giveaway as a reward for building a decent player each season then I think that is a dumb idea, but at least let's call it what it is if that's what we do.

Honestly, this suggestion is just your player winning MVP, and not getting awesome gear, so you coming to the forums to rage about it.

http://goallineblitz.com/game/team.pl?season=12&team_id=149 Nov 2009, when "the game" happened
That's what? 2 or 3 seasons later? Definitely a knee-jerk reaction imo
Then of course, you have the fact that the Halifax players didn't even win MVP (they did have highest passing yards etc, which was denied, rightfully)

The simple fact of the matter is that the endorsement is a very good piece that gives teams an incentive to try and do that (personally, I'd rather just get rid of the Corporate MVP endorsement myself and give the winner a regular National endorsement) and as such we have to put measures in to minimize teams doing that.
Can we get a mod to lock this up?

Hell, when Bort dreamed up the idea, he never intended the MVP to always get it.

For the record, this was approximately 9-10 months BEFORE Halifax apparently stole GLB's collective innocence.
