This is what we do in a sim-league:
Basically you choose a team and receive the full roster along with overalls and ages. Then you can make whatever changes you want to the team, aslong as it is "legal" within the game and his sim-league. Once you make changes he will then enter your team changes into the actual game and he will sim the games every couple of days posting the scores and leading stats along with other important statistics. You change your team more and more appropiately to match your weaknesses and strengthen your weapons. Once the regular season and post season is complete we go through offseason changes, including retirements, Free Agency, Rookie Signings, etc.
