I have no doubt it is a fun game to play, but as a spectator sport I just dont get it.

Players give away penalties on purpose if they are on the backfoot, and because penalty goals are worth 3, and tries 5, they will take the option of the goal 99% of the time. You end up with games 24-16 where the winning team kicked 6 penalties and the loser scored 2 tries.

For me it makes it quite boring...... alot like soccer actually.

you need to understand that these guys are running constantly, so they struggle to keep focus on the quality of skills that they produce and the gameplay in general, when they are required to physically exert themselves for the whole time that they are on the field of play, and then they still need to be wary of big hits from the opposition that could come at any time that they are within 5 meters of the ball. ...sometimes the big hits also come from away from the ball action.

just to show that it not just about showboating ...it can get violent:

Yes because you don't wear pads, which in turn limits your ability to hit one another, its better?

I'm sorry but I'd rather see big hits all day than broken bones and other serious injuries being in the back of everyone's mind while playing.

Pads make the game better, not worse, one day you Canadians will figure that out, till then I'll keep laughing as your leagues crumble under the pressure.

If you have that mindset you arent playing any contact sport.

Injuries happen, and the games are completely different. Pads would not work in Rugby Leage just like no pads wont work in gridiron.

I remember watching a group of 15-17 year old Americans who came out to Australia playing a game of Rugby Leage. The tackling (In a rugby league sense) was atrocious. I saw 2 or 3 broken noses because boys would go flying in face first like they had pads on.

It was comical really, especially when every guy with the ball ran for the sideline, which turns the ball over in Rugby League.

I got taught that my helmet was a weapon, not a protective device.

I dare say there would be more injuries (and of greater severity) in the NFL than in league/union.

I have heard those terms being used by people that live where the rugby code is stronger at the moment, but that is just coz of ignorance ...whether you guys want to accept it or not, AFL is the national sport in Australia, and yas will have to embrace it sooner or later, coz it will take over coz it is a better sport ...I call rugby a 'MEATHEADS' sport, coz all that seems to be evident in rugby is people getting bashed and stomped on ...it's a good sport if you are a thug, but there isn't much skill involved in rugby that isn't already being used in AFL ...AFL has the financial backing! ...R.I.P. Rugby!

A world of difference betweern ruby league and union. Also most americans haven't seen good rugby, or understand the strategy and tactics. They might even have gone to a couple practices with (or watched) some crappy team and think they understand the game, but they are still so far away from really understanding.
Just as in football, the better the team the faster the play. In better rugby play stops a lot less becasue there ares so many fewer knock ons where idiots drop the ball forward. In division 2&3 american rugby, the play is constantly stopped just becasue people don't have basic ball control.
I don't really watch much sports on TV anymore, damn you for abandoning us Houston Oilers! But while football is fun to watch on tv, rugby is a far, far more entertaining sport to play. As far as athletic levels, at top professional levels both football and rugby players are going to be in peak physical fitness and neither is really going to be fitter then the other becasue both are going to max out physical training regimens. Of course they are training for different sports, in rugby even a big fat prop (yours truly) has to run over 5 miles, and thats just distance, without all the pushing, tackling, getting up off the ground etc.
Before any more of you start talking about what tough internet sports stars you are. You should know I'm just going to say that every place in america has a rugby team in driving distance and if you want too, just go on out to a practice and say that you heard their a bunch of pussies and you'd like to participate in some basic tackling drills. Please take some video, you can probably make a few bucks on youtube.
