I played it in high school, and I can guarantee you it is [when compared to rugby league... now everything is relative, so its 'hardcore' compared to lawn bowls! ].

High school, Australia, both in the forwards [non-glamor position = o-lineman slash powerback for those playing in the U.S ).

What team and level. League is hard but if you have played rugby you wouldn't knock union, period. I've played both! Both are hard and demanding.

Both are the same at the lower levels (which is all high school football is for the most part in Australia, there's no AAA, AA etc), but at the elite (National) level League is WAY tougher than union, and way better to watch.

We will have to agree to disagree. Union has a ton more aggressive behavior in the scrums, rucks, and mauls.

I agree league scrums are a joke (a nice little 30 second breather for no reason), but the tackles are way better [you get to put far better hits on people in league (you occasionally get to line people up in union but because its more of a 'rolling' game its harder to get set shots on people [happens but less often, most of the time their just in scramble mode]).

Yeah agree to disagree. I like American football better then both though (as its more like chess with pads ).

Scrums in RL are for the attack to have the whole field just 7 on 7..... then they moved them to 20m infield and the advantage went away. Now they are a waste.

AFL????? U serious. No one understands that game, not even Victorians !!!

As a Number 8/Flanker, I disagree. My bread and butter is hitting. Loads of hits coming from all angles. I've had six separated shoulders, three each, and a half dozen concussions telling me its a contact sport.

The difference with American Football and Rugby, Union or League, is lack of blocking. American Football will cripple you especially if your a lineman. Every lineman at the pro level will have had numerous knee surgeries. Being big guys that doesn't bode well for them latter in life.
