I guess I don't understand what that means, are you saying he was afraid of the ball carrier?
it's just a simulation after all. but imo there is some kind of confidence check that occurs when the angle a defensive player takes towards the ballcarrier. in particular i've noticed this with my LB. he takes much better angles when he's further away with higher confidence than he did when confidence was lower.
Another way of putting it...low confidence, you take the "safer" angle, often wide and looping, meeting the player downfield. Higher confidence players will take more of a "risk" (though, with decent attributes, shouldn't fail often), try to meet the player closer to the LOS. Because of low confidence, you potentially allowed more yardage than you needed to.
