So, where are we at in regard to supply and demand?
On one level, I understand why GLB ownership/management (LOL at pretending there is a difference) are disappointed with flex purchases. But on the other hand, THEY gave up on this game when there was no viable competition that forced them to do so--there still isn't a better game of American Football out there to play.
Would it kill them to give it another go, show some interest in the existing customer base, and see if some attention to the product might re-invigorate the base?

"Competition" doesn't matter when the number of people interested in playing an overly complex browser based football MMORPG is small (and ever shrinking).
Prove me wrong, and gain some flex points in the process...spread your referral link around. Buy some banner ads and use your referral link for it. Everyone benefits. I'd love nothing more to be proven wrong about the actual market of this genre.

Ya, it is pretty tough to get people into this game. Even as a free player. But I would be interested in seeing the market on insta 79's with some fresh playbooks. Probably not huge, but worth a couple seasons among the people that have been here anyways. Would definitely have to do something for the player side though, which probably looks unfeasible from your guys end.
Insta-79s would be pretty disasterous.
For starters, all current players would be furious if there wasn't an in-depth player builder that lets you simulate an entire years worth of leveling in one sitting. But that in itself would be a massive turnoff for people who don't want to sit down and spend 4 hours building a player, which is every person not already heavily invested.
Simplifying that process, and just giving people a dump of SP to spend instead of having them meticulously go through a long spreadsheet calculation process would expedite the whole thing. But then they are either worse than players built the normal way, which means they are useless to most people that actually want the feature, or they are better than players the normal way, which means the normal way should be removed.
So, the only option to make them worthwhile is just doing away with the old system, giving new players a big dump of SP, and letting them go. Except, at that point, there's nothing to do. No more points to spend, no more improvements. The only thing left is dicking around with free agency which I think is universally agreed upon as the least interesting part of the game.
At that point we may as well make it an owner/coordinator only game.

That's what I mean. You would have to do something from the player side of things which would mean extra complexities to the game and ultimately not something you guys want to spend your time with.
And I agree, the insta 79 deal isn't gonna work out on its own for nothing. That is why I was against it for many seasons. That may as well be the end game if nothing goes into the player building beyond that.
If it went to an owner/coordinator only game you would pretty much have to do a seasonal subscription to own a full 55 players with access to their tactics. Granted that would either be incredibly drawn out where you would have to build 55 players or just be a real drag of adding 55 essentially CPU guys built somewhat to the standards of the game where you can change their individual tactics through the quick tactics editor.
That seems like a lot of coding to still be the game it is right now.

New plays seems to be a really easy thing that makes a lot of sense. Like if you told us that you were switching 3-4 formations with new formations and plays that seems like it would be a pretty solid thing.
Rip out 5 WR (useless), GL (completely over exploited), and Big I (completely over exploited) and change the face of the game with 3-4 new formations. Hell maybe you even change the set of formations available every season.

I agree with this. They need to change something to freshen the old game up and this possibly could be the best idea

This is all true to an extent but its too black & white. To me, there are 2 premises for accelerating the build process...and a 3rd comment I'd make.
1) The build process is too long & tedious. So accelerating something tedious is not a negative. People will either immediately build completely new dots or they will wait until the current crop prove ineffective & maybe rebuild a few at a time. Either way, why not let the players figure out for themselves how they want to do it? What are they going to do...quit because it takes 4 hours to build a dot rather than a year?
For that matter...make the dot-builder as fluid as possible to minimize the need for external spreadsheets. Make the ALG to L-79 onscreen like that script does during the build process. Add in the "SPs to next level" hover popup functionality of the other script. Beyond that...a little imperfection due to not wanting to spend an hour per dot is perfectly fine imo. It means you can hurry thru dots & get slightly less than perfect, or take your time and get perfection. Who cares, the point is to make it faster than a year. Not happy with something? Rebuild the dot next ssn.
2) Teams needing just a handful of dots to remain competitive (like you cannot be competitive without a well-built QB if the agent goes inactive/quits). Preventing these types of guts will improve the competition level at or near the top levels as a nice side effect.
So why cant you just accelerate building to x level and provide a SP dump for levels x to 79? That way, there is still a reward for keeping some non-Pro levels competitive but the impossible to watch lowest levels get eliminated.
3) You think this is not a Team/Coordinator game right now? Thats what this game is...tactics & builds. And lets be honest here, if you need to make coordinating slightly more accessible, ask a solid OC and a solid DC to donate an AI/DPC/Playbook combo for the public good of the game. I'm not the best DC you could ask, but I'd be happy to donate a complete defense for public use with easy tag instructions. You have to make it that easy to coordinate multiple teams & handle multiple base schemes. I'm sure there are others who could do the same for the Offense and if there are multiple coordinators willing to donate,, all the better.
The point is...these are all highly solvable problems. Just engage the user base, challenge the opinions/suggestions (as you're doing), and ask for what you need to make the game accessible for the agents that haven't spent years refining their schemes.
