If we can't screw up the build, then by definition we can't make the build excellent either, because at the highest level of any game a "screwed up build" is one that hasn't been maximized so that it can compete well with the opposition.

I find it hard to believe that there is no way to screw up a build. There is ALWAYS a way to screw up a build, and I usually find that way
You can still specialize a build.
Start with GLB1 in mind.
Now take away daily training.
Now take away ALGs.
Now take away caps as you know them.
Now, give yourself 6 attributes that define the long-term build of your player.
Now think that you can choose three "traits" that will increase and decrease the % SP cost
--How you choose these 6 attributes and three traits will define the SP cost of every skill and the maximum that skill can go to.--
--Some traits will make it cheaper to add points into skill A, but more expensive to add points to skill B.--
Now think that every time you add points to a skill, the SP cost goes up, like a constantly increasing cap.
Assuming that two players picked the same attributes and traits:
In this model you can spend your first 50,000 SP on sprinting or your last 50,000 SP on sprinting and the build will end up in the same place. This means that you can still have an end build in mind, but the path you choose to take to get there no longer involves the "okay, so I have to take my speed to 100 first, then take my agility to 95, etc." that you have in GLB1.
There will still be better builders, because they will be the ones who choose the right combination of attributes and traits to make getting to the end build they want less expensive. For instance if you want super speed, you are going to want to have Speed and Agility at 10 in order to maximize the number of points you can add into speed/agility skills. Next you are going to want to pick traits that decrease the SP cost of sprinting, quickness, and footwork; however, any trait that helps with those is going to make adding points into other skills cost more. Then, if you have any traits left, you are going to want to pick those will actually let you do something with all that speed. HB? Better have rushing techniques, carrying, and awareness. You probably are going to need to know how to catch the ball too, because otherwise you are going to need an OC who is willing to only put you in under pure rushing formations. WR? You need to catch the ball, you need route running, you need to be able to hold onto the ball after you were hit. If the traits that gave you all that speed make it so that the QB might as well be throwing to a wooden plank, no one is going to want you on their 43 man roster.
I think there's a lot of people on here who are judging a game they haven't played pretty harshly. Then again, a lot of these are the same people who have claimed to hate almost everything about GLB, a game they've been playing for years and continue to play.
