There was a point in time. Some dev/mod tossed a nick on some one for fun. Then someone started a thread begging for a nickname too. Others joined in.
Few months back, maybe six but think less.

lol this was when GLB2 was starting to cop some serious flak and admin was under fire on the forums for 'neglecting' GLB1 ...just acted like a pressure valve tbh

Apparently the option is not universal. Probably only there for folks the admins added nicks for I guess.
