Well, considering they intend to do an alpha period (one or more seasons?) that will only include 50 or so users it makes sense to keep things running at least through that phase. From there, the game will likely enter a beta phase (probably at least long enough for a player to play from beginning to end) that some people won't be interested in playing. I suspect there will be more than a handful that are currently working their way through the current ladder and will want to complete their run.
All that being said, it makes perfect sense to allow both games run concurrently for some time. Its also possible that the new game is much more "casual" than the current game (or vice versa) and the two run concurrently forever.
I'm sure they'll provide answers at the pace they feel is best for their business.
