real answer is depends on whether you're building them for plateau success or not. if you are, then don't worry about missed tackles (or everything else Defensive dots will suck at) at Univ. level

If only the OP had indicated what level of dot he was concerned about! With that vital piece of information, we could then give him an answer suited to the exact level of dot for which he was inquiring!

I'm really shocked it took so long for the obvious answer to come out here. Tackling is the main attribute in the make tackle roll guys, no need to overthink this one... or worse saying something stupid like has already been done in this thread.

Have a level 30 dot, strength and tackling will both end at 80, was trying to determine which one would be more beneficial to cap and raise first as they are both majors and both at the same value right now. Thanks for the help people.

Tackling determines your non diving tackling radius all by itself. Non diving tackles are much stronger than diving tackles.
Jumping determines your diving tackle radius and makes your diving tackle stronger, but jumping is something a young DT shouldn't have.

Works for even DB's and LB's. Both will need/want jumping but it shouldn't be a priority for lower level dots.

No what I mean is that the tackling attribute helps your tackling radius, and the strength attribute does not. That is why tackling is more important than strength at the lower leagues for making tackles, because dots tend to lack agility or speed or vision or all three to get into position, so at least having high tackling gives them a chance to make those barely-in-reach tackles. Jumping will help your diving tackie radius, sure, but chances are if you have high jumping at lower levels you will miss the tackle even if you are close enough to dive for it.

Huh, why did I think we were talking DT?
Yeah don't worry about it then, just build your dot, once you get DvG on them they'll be tackling Jesus.

Tackling
Higher tackling= higher tackling radius
Yes Jump increases that radius some, but mainly helps your tackle rolls on diving tackles

This is not a correct statement:
Bort Q&A:
PM question from user re: tackling radius:
1: Does tackling style play a factor in tackling radius?
2: Does jumping play a role in regular tackling radius or only diving tackling?
3: I know there is a maximum regular tackle radius, is there a maximum diving tackle radius?
4: What determines diving tackle radius? Is it just the amount in the diving tackle SA, or do other attributes play a part?
5: How much larger is the maximum diving tackle radius than the max normal tackling radius?

2: Just diving
3: Yes, it's based on the actual physical distance the player could dive based on his attributes.
4: Jumping and tackling skill determine the radius; "Diving Tackle" makes completing the tackle easier.
5: It depends on attributes, but about a couple yards.
