I had all sort of problems with my plays that had flat thirds as well. I'm too lazy to go back ~2 seasons and find them, but safeties assigned to flat thirds went from working well to acting *completely* retarded back then.

They'll hang 2-3 yards off the ball and assuming they've got any vision/agility at all - 9/10 times drive the play back into the pursuit from the inside. They seem to use the outside edge of the zone, rather than the midpoint of it ...
