If you promote tossing in the towel for your team before the first game, that's fine. I'm glad you guys took the time to share your opinions on it, rather than simply stating 'waaa'.

some owners do alot (i.e. recruit, AIs for non-casual, the whole sha-bang)
I have no disagreement with that statement. I'm familiar with the roles of an owner.

I think people are confusing 'snarky' with 'whining'. lol. I guess it's all in the comprehension.

Best thing is to just be honest and tell them that it's going to be a down season and let them know what your plans are for the future (recruiting, resetting, ect...).

Wow, that was like 2 kids and 3 jobs ago in real life.

I've owned a team and been an OC ... and have decided to never do that again. As an Owner, many agents wondered why their dots weren't stars. However, the worst was being an OC. I wasn't a great OC, but I wasn't awful either. I had my good moments and bad moments. However, the thing that really burned me up was when we were playing a halfway decent team in our league, and we rolled up 60+ points on them. You'd think the players would've been happy. Well, some agents were angry that we didn't throw the ball more. They even got in the Owner's ear, and he asked me to start throwing more. Well, we lost our next game, because I threw too much. Then, everyone was angry with the offense, so I just said "screw it, I'm done." I haven't done anything other than build my few dots since then.

I try to be an active coordinator, but I'm not going to lie to our players about our chances.
I let them know what we have, what other teams have, and what our chances are realistically. I also try to be transparent about what I am doing as a coordinator, and how I am trying to mitigate our weaknesses, capitalize on our strengths, and target the weaknesses of other teams.
I really hate being on teams where unrealistic expectations are held and there is no realistic/logical plan of action to actually meet any season goals. Optimism is good and everything, but how the individual agents feel about the team has nothing to do with team performance through the season. Obviously having an active forum environment can help retain players and help with recruiting next season, which is something an owner should think about and attempt to foster among the team, but that can be done without any sort of optimism or pessimism for the current season.
And you know what, sometimes if you don't actively put your player out there and try to find a decent team, you'll end up signing with one of the shittier teams with a less active recruitment schedule. Most of the better teams do their recruiting between day 20 and day 40, a lot of rosters are already full before the off-season even begins, so as a player that is the best time to advertise your dot and make a commitment.

"I only signed you so I can trade you for cash"
"I hate the Redskins so I'm just gonna bench you all season"
