By your definition the link you posted would not be a hook thread, as about 90% of the population had a good idea what that thread was about before they opened it. Also, by that definition only about 2 percent of all threads are not hooked in some regard.

...all on the first page. All of those titles tell me what it's about, and before I even click on it I know what's initially being talked about.

The one I linked earlier, there are plenty of things that could have happened. I remember clicking on it just to figure out what he was talking about, realized I didn't care, and then left the thread. Hook.

Our policy generally is that if it is a hook thread but otherwise fine, we just edit the title and leave it open.

So "5-2" is descriptive enough for you, but it is not descriptive enough for you to use "so my casual team that hasn't had a real player on it for months." Hmmm how completely illogical. The first tells you it is about a defense, but what about the defense. The second one tells you everything that will be in the thread before you open it, not just that it is about casual league. Thanks for playing. What about team waiting lists? Promos? That tells you something? No. So it is your position that thread titles should basically be fit to be forum headers and be very broad? Please give it a rest. the first 3 are bad thread titles. I did not click the rest really in all fairness to you. I figured though that if the first 3 are bad I have a good indication of what you think might be good.

'5-2' tells me that the thread is about the 5-2 defense. I don't know what SPECIFICALLY about the 5-2 defense, but I know that if I don't want to read about the 5-2 defense, don't open it.

"So my casual team that hasn't had a real player on it for months..." is half of the sentence. What's the other half? What about his CPU team? I don't know what he's going to talk about. I clicked it to figure it out. Realized I didn't care. Left. If the thread had said "My Team Full of CPUs Got Promoted", I would have realized I don't care BEFORE clicking the thread.

"Promos" - The thread is about promos...
"Waiting List" - The thread is about waiting lists (This one might not be a great example, admittedly, if you don't remember the waiting lists)

If the title gives you a general idea of what's in the thread, that's good. Doesn't have to be super specific. But, a thread title that DOESN'T tell you what it's about, or makes you have to open the thread to read the other half of the sentence in the title, that's a hook.

Wow, so how is someone supposed to know what is and isn't going to pertain to you. How could you not know precisely where he was going with the 2nd one before you clicked it, yet you know precisely everything the 5-2 was going to be about? You have to be kidding me. Not only is your definition wrong, you are applying it inconsistently.

Again, how is the writer supposed to know which component he is writing about will be most interesting to you when he is writing about several different things. 5-2 has many different components. Some I would like to read some I would not. The thread you call a hook thread mentioned 3 major things in the title if you are not interested in those 3 things tied together then don't click on it. Seriously.

Again, you are applying a wrong definition inconsistently. You have a much broader title and you are saying you know more about it than the one that is far more precise. 5-2 actually tells you far less about the thread than the one you call a hook thread.
