I would love internally searchable forums.

I would hate, however, to have glitchy, slow, frustrating forums and game servers from the increased load created by internally searchable forums, which is what we had the last time we had internally searchable forums. That's the reason they got rid of the internal search function to begin with -- people were SCREAMING about how slow and terribad the servers were, and server performance improved big-time when they got rid of forum search.

So, file this one under "Be careful what you wish for... you just might get it."

Using Google to search the forums works just fine for me, and it will work just fine for anyone willing to put in 5 minutes to learn how to do it. It's really not that hard.

This could turn into a circular argument but why not invest in better/more servers? Users are paying for this game. Are you saying GLB can only enhance the experience so much because of the drain on the servers?

Have you ever tried to write a search engine of any sort? Especially one that relies on searching a text field for a piece of data? Its not a matter of more or better servers, its a matter of a design created specifically for that purpose. I don't care how good your database server is, if you're searching millions of records for a single word (or phrase) you're going to bring your server to its knees.

Eh, other forums are searchable. It's clearly doable. It just requires better resources than what GLB is willing to invest in it.

And that brings us to...

Mo' servers cost mo' money.

Will having internally-searchable forums cause you -- and others -- to shell out a bunch more money for Flex as a result? It didn't last time it was tried.

Remember, it's not just about improving the customer's experience... it's about improving the customer's experience in such a way that the customer shells out more money as a result.

Ok Ok.... so Google works... but honestly we shouldn't HAVE to go to another page just to do a search on this
site.

Agreed. But the only way to make forum search internal again is to add more servers. And adding more servers costs more money, but isn't likely to increase revenue at all.

And there's the catch-22, if you will.

Not really a matter or more servers...more a matter of having the right structure. At this point GLB has been reluctant to lean on 3rd party software and when they have, its blown up in their face (see Chat). Its possibly to have searchable forums, no doubt, but building the structure and process to make it possible may be out of the range of a small startup unless they switch to 3rd party software.

Wow, another good suggestion from 2 years ago left to rot in voting. Shocking.

Whoever decided on the chat software they use now should really learn to do more research. There are even FREE alternatives that blow that out of the water.

As to the OP, I would think that at the very least, how to do a GLB forum search via Google should be added to the GLB Wiki.... problem solved.

(and yes, I already know how but many users do not)
