tpat was kind of the one compiling it into the polls and stuff, then bailed after the first one iirc

That being said the HoF would be a nightmare to construct now I think. Games just don't seem to be about the great players anymore like they used to.

He was in charge. I don't remember him ever bailing. We spend a whole season compiling everything and got it ready and then GLB just really never acknowledged it and came out with what we have now. Which is just kinda lolspam.

Because the only ways to do so alienates large portions of the userbase.

Trying to enforce teams to not just have all perfectly built dots (like the WL now) with stringent salary caps or some kind of max total SP value would have arguably done more damage than not.

Unfortunate, but it is what it is.

If by that, you mean tpat disappearing, yeah.

The public voting had already taken place, that first hof class was essentially in the books before tpat disappeared.

Ok, so now for my actual not smart ass answer.

Get rid of networks.
Bring back cash (atleast make it mean something)
Make EQ costs cheaper, this is after cash is brought back, so teams can afford good players and build a stadium
Make player development quicker, maybe make players got from 0 to 79 in 5 seasons)
Let players reach level 100

You will never get rid of networks anymore. How do you make people not help or play with each other?
I have to say I do miss the eq cash part of GLB. It was far more of a dilemma than who am I gonna promo this season?
again
i think it will happen...just not before they are stabled by other games financially.
that would be a huge step in the wrong direction. Going from level 72 to 79 was already one of the biggest mistakes ever.

Essentially in tpat's books

Generally when the leader of a pet project disappears the pet project kind of fades into obscurity.

I mean, it's pretty understandable that Bort just wrote a script to calculate it. The guy putting in huge amounts of time to keep track and compile all the data went AWOL, so continuing the project would require huge amounts of time from somebody to keep track and compile the data, and people continuing to do so.

It's like GLB radio dying. The people that were putting in the effort quit, so it's hard to expect the admins to just drop everything and take over. It's hard to say the HoF committee wasn't in limbo immediately after the first poll.

Not that the current HoF thing is anything meaningful, but it wasn't like the big bad man came and stomped on a thriving pet project of the users.

My humble opinion which I doubt anyone else will share:

A) Less trolling allowed on the forums. Much stricter moderation.
B) More involvement from the devs and admins in the game. Announcements, teams, forum games and threads, spurring constructive discussion.
(which leads to)
C) Having the devs talk to the community more often (What happened to those "state of the game" announcements?). Share opinions, things of notice, release more information (I've been asking for this since 2009). The community being kept in the dark and fed on bullshit is the way to grow mushrooms, not a healthy playerbase.
(which leads to)
D) Sweep ALL SA AND VAN DESCRIPTIONS to make them EXPLICIT in which situations they fire and what they do. REMOVE ALL FLAVOR. It is pointless in the way the game has evolved.
E) Improve the team promotion and demotion rules (and make them more explicit while you're at it). There are still cases of teams not ending up where they deserve to be and the pro-wl-regional pro rules are not easy to understand for most.
F) Don't abandon development on this game. Even though it is out of beta and should be "stable" there can still be work done to improve it and that shows us, the users, that the developers and admins CARE.
G) Develop a better noob tutorial system that is inline with the actual training and SP spending actions. Don't just make videos explaining how to do things, do it showing how to do things RIGHT. It is still hard for a newb to come here and understand the intrincacies of the game. Make it easier for them.
H) Play to your strengths. The game has evolved, it's not what bort envisioned ages ago, and he can't get that back, so focus on the strong points now, advertise around that, clean up the weak points (most mentioned above) so as to minimize their impact.
I) Have the devs/admins talk to us of outside the game issues. Coding. Developing. Systems. Finance. Get in touch with us and create a bond, don't just abandon and expect people to stay because they are already here.

This should do for now, but there's plenty more ways to make the game better and funnier. Having said that, the game is STILL enjoyable.

I dunno, tpat most of the time seemed to be as confused as us about it but he is the one who spent the time talking to the uppers about it. He certainly didn't disappear prior to Bort's HoF opening and our project was sitting around finished for quite some time.

Looking at the changelog, maybe you're right.

The poll code was added 5 days after the GLB HoF thing.

Either way...it was still pretty much nothing but the top 50 players in the game giving each other the slow stroke. The current version is meaningless for 100% of people, while the original iteration was meaningless for 99.9% of people. *shrug*

In the grand scheme the HoF itself was probably meaningless. But it is those small gestures of sweeping the userbase under the rug on things non sim related that I think GLB plays pretty poorly a lot of the time.

The only thing they should be ashamed of is killing CPL.

First CPL and then the world really.
