I have never known a game or any piece of software or online service to work that way tbh...
All presentations are reactive, not proactive.
Study groups are still lottery, not nirvana.

GLB userbase has a weird sense of entitlement.

They don't care about our input as much as people want them to.

Which is pretty silly and self defeating.

I assume they will, for a select number. It's called Alpha.

By the time you get to Alpha its too late, all you are doing then is making adjustments.

The major game CONCEPTS are where they would benefit from the thoughts of the people who will, or won't, pay for the game.

taking the users suggestions helped really kill THIS game tbh

It's easy to get an invite to alpha test the new game

All you have to do, for starters, is kiss Catch22's fat ass.

There's also a big legal component. When everything is ready for Alpha, you'll know.

They should be reaching out to the entire user base, at least as represented by the forums - its free marketing research. Something big business spends billions on.

Have you SEEN the Suggestions forum lately?

There's only a handful of people here on GLB whose opinions I would even consider taking seriously towards developing a new game -- and most of them rarely, if ever, post on the forums.

Hell, if I were Catch and Bort, I doubt I would even consider my opinions on a new game. I'm too hot-headed and too much of a rabble-rouser, and I don't always think things through.

Assuming that GLB's userbase as a whole is a vast, untapped wealth of knowledge on building a new game is laughable. Purely laughable. If all of us know so much about what makes a game great, then why haven't more of us gone out and made our own games? Answer: because we the users don't know as much as you think we know.

That's not to say Bort and Catch couldn't benefit more from listening to some opinions from some users. Quite frankly, I think they used to spend too much time listening to the users, and it caused them to make some mistakes with the game, which in turn has caused them to overreact and stop listening to the users much at all. They need to find a balance in between.

But throwing open the early development of their next game from the beginning would be folly. Hopefully they've learned from their mistakes with GLB, and hopefully they have a select core of GLB users who they are talking to for feedback. (And don't forget, Catch22 himself started out as just another user like you and me.) If they haven't learned, well... they'll pay the price for it when their next game bombs. That's their problem.

Generally agree with Novus, seems like mainly the main problem wasn't that they've listened too much to the complaints about what was broken or bothersome, but rather that they listened too much about user-proposed solutions to those issues.

In other words, rather than take specific "suggestions", they should just field complaints about what's wrong with the game to get a sense of what's causing users frustration or angst. The bug forum isn't that. If you complain about something that isn't working well in the game, but technically isn't "broken", then it's not a bug, and you're supposed to take it to suggestions. But suggestions usually come with a proposed solution in mind.

It's similar to a large business, the business unit (i.e., customer) might explain their need to the tech team, so the tech team can design and implement a solution to meet the need that's consistent with the overall design and integrates well with other solutions. When you have the business unit not only describing the need but also proposing the solutions, it usually ends up a disaster pretty quickly.

If Bort and team have a true vision for the new software, they are wise to work on it behind the scenes. When they are ready for user input, they'll let you know.
Not someone in the know, just someone who develops software. If a dev team has a clue and the right vision, they need to get the basics set before being inundated with too many ideas.
