Let's say you're at work, and on Monday morning your boss hands you a project to work on. He tells you it's due by Wednesday at 12 noon, because that's when he has to leave the office and catch a flight for a business trip, and if he doesn't have the project in his hand before he leaves, you're fired. Oh, and you also have to stay on top of all of your other normal daily assignments too, so dropping everything else to just work on this project isn't an option.

So, you work a little faster to get all of your other stuff done so you can carve out some extra time to work on the project. You have a lot to get done, but you know your deadline is Wednesday at 12 noon, and while it's gonna be close, you're pretty sure you can get it done before then.

And you do. A little early, even, because it's 11:30am on Wednesday, and you're done, with 30 minutes to spare. You print everything off and head down the hall to your boss's office... and he's gone. He left early, with no warning. And from the airport, he texts you, "You're fired."

And all of your co-workers laugh at you and say, "You should've had it done by 10am, man! Good luck finding a new job, and fuck you. "

Really?

...and your sim starts 1:30 before "sim time." Guess what? You're screwed.

They need to paint a finish line. Is that really so much to ask? Just paint a finish line.

Well, your co-workers is kinda douchebags, but if your approach to doing work is to try to time it so that you finish the work just before the deadline, you're going to end up getting burned, like the countless people I know who had a paper due for a class who started it the afternoon of the day when it was due at midnight, finished it even half an hour or an hour in advance, but had their internet crap out on them or something like that.

That's the thing, though, in this scenario, you DIDN'T wait until the last minute. You worked as fast as you could, which is why you got done 30 minutes early... but your boss moved the deadline without telling you, and then fired you for missing it.

What if the boss left at 11:00am instead of 11:30am? Or if he left at 10:00am? Is that still your fault for not having it done even earlier?

At some point the boss either should've warned you, "Hey, hurry up, I'm going to be leaving early," or he should've said, "Hey, sorry, I've gotta leave early, but I'm not going to fire you."

I'm not disagreeing that it should be addressed, I'm just saying that it's best to get gameplanning done well in advance in order to deal with unexpected circumstances, whether they be on the game's end (early start time, server problems), your end (personal life issues, connection problems), or whatever. Obviously things come up, but things are just as likely to come up that would prevent you from gameplanning properly even if the game started late.

In any case, it's also always good to have something pretty basic in place as a backup plan that can be plugged in if you're short on time. And if you're worried about the game starting early, plug in that basic system while you're working on the opponent-specific stuff so that if it does start early you're not caught with your pants down, so to speak.

Okay, so clearly you're in the camp that thinks I should stop whining and get my gameplan done 6 hours early.

Let me ask you this: would you be hurt in any way if Bort and Catch established an official one-hour window for a sim to run in? Do you have any reasons why it should stay the way it is now? Do you have any reasons why the way it is now is better? Or are you just trolling?

If you're just trolling, go to Free For All and let us grown-ups talk about this.

Like I said to Qillar, do you have any reasons why things should stay the way they are now? Do you have any reasons why the current setup is better than my proposal?

We're in a race where there's no finish line painted. Sure, it's safest for me to assume it's a 40 meter sprint and run all-out as fast as I can. That doesn't change the fact that the race officials need to paint a damn finish line so we know where the finish line is.

Casual doesn't really gameplan, so it's a nice surprise to log in at 8:55 and have a game ready to watch 5 mins early.

Other than that I don't really care.

BINGO. These no-warning randomly-early sims make coordinating harder than it needs to be, without making the game more enjoyable. Harder is fine if it at least makes the game more fun, but this doesn't. It makes the game more stressful.

It's a GAME. It's not supposed to be stressful.

For a coordinator that gives a crap, GLB has always been stressful.

...and Catch just PM'ed me to basically tell me "Gameplan earlier," and that sims never start any earlier than 60 minutes before sim time.

I normally do gameplan earlier. Today was the rare exception when I couldn't.

And today, my sim started 64 minutes before sim time, so sorry, Catch, but you're wrong.

Just paint a finish line.
