Move it back. There's still a useful purpose to having this thread in GLB main.

Latest bulletin from 8 minutes ago expanded the tsunami warning out a bit to cover more Pacific islands than before. But the biggest tsunami reported so far was still only about 3 feet tall -- still nothing to sneeze at, but nothing catastrophic unless you own a boat or a pier or something. Still gathering data and observations though, and tsunami waves can be weird sometimes.

No watches or warnings issued yet for Hawaii, Alaska, or the USA Pacific coast.

Nobody should be panicking, but everyone on the West Coast should at least be aware of what's happening. Just keep an eye on the news, and check it from time to time to make sure nothing's changed.

Guess that's a wrap, at least for California and points north... probably for Hawaii too...

geez.

If they live right on the water I guess a three foot wave coming through would suck.

Also the size of the waves can vary. Like the one in Alaska that was not a big deal in other locations but because of the bottom formations and currents or what have you in Hawaii it was pretty destructive and high.

All tsunami warnings and watches now cancelled.

Lata Wharf in the Solomon Islands had the biggest tsunami at 3 feet, while a couple of places in New Caledonia had tsunamis of 2 feet. And that's been pretty much it.

An 8.0 can be a real mother of a quake, but you don't tend to see big ocean-wide tsunamis until you get above 8.5 or so. But there's always exceptions, so from a tsunami-generation standpoint you have to take anything above about a 7.0 seriously until you learn otherwise, just to be on the safe side.

I have a co-worker with family in Guam, so hopefully they're alright... pretty far from the quake though, if I remember my south Pacific island geography right. Pacific Ocean is big, yo.
