I think their economy would allow them to survive without the need for joining anyone's republic.

As long as they keep all those drugs coming across the border then maybe so. Otherwise, doubtful.

An interesting read:

http://blog.chron.com/txpotomac/2012/11/texas-secession-fact-and-fiction/?fb_action_ids=4794285372924&fb_action_types=og.recommends&fb_source=timeline_og&action_object_map=%7B%224794285372924%22%3A169038626553357%7D&action_type_map=%7B%224794285372924%22%3A%22og.recommends%22%7D&action_ref_map=%5B%5D

oh, and it's a petition that has over 80k signatures (keep in mind Texas is the 2nd most populous state in the union at 25 million+) and not actual votes in any official political setting.

is it embarrassing? a little, but it's not like some state (usually int he south somewhere) doesn't try and do crap like this after every election. it's just a lot of huffing and puffing and sour grapes.

what is cool is that we have the right to split into 5 states if we choose.

After 2004, there were some people in blue states like NY and CA that wwanted to do the same thing. The problem with secession that most people aren't even thinking about is paying the federal government for the assets they take and how much it would cost afterward.

Here's an ancillary example, I went to UVa and right now the school receives something like 5% of its annual funding from the state, but it is still a public school, so the state government has a fair amount of control over the school. A lot of people would like the school to privatize and stop receiving any state funding so they can keep state politicians out of the business of running the school.

Now, that sounds easy, but the state owns all the land, buildings and intellectual property. The school would ahve to buy the assets from the state if it were to privatize. The value of all those assets is something in the neighborhood of $3 billion dollars. Privatization is a non-starter.

Similarly for Texas, even if the state were allowed to seceed, they'd have to pay the feds for all federal owned land and buildings (including all the land with oil on it), all the rights owned by the feds. That's going to be some number in the hundreds of billions of dollars probably (for comparison, the entire Texas state budget was $80 billion last year - http://sunshinereview.org/index.php/Texas_state_budget).

Not only that, Texas would probably have to assume some share of the federal debt in proportion to its population or land or something.

Lastly, while Texas has a balanced budget, now they'd have to pay for all the stuff that the feds used to pay for. A military, entitlements, foreign relations, border security, health care, social security, other entitlements. No state income tax in Texas? You can kiss that goodbye. That or you can kiss a lot of services goodbye. The Texas rate might have to be higher than the federal rate is now since Texas is a net recipient of federal tax revenue (more federal tax money is spent for Texas than is collected from Texas - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_taxation_and_spending_by_state).

The idea may sound good, but its pretty much a horrible idea all around.

i dunno, if texas succeeds, then supreme leader perry will surely force all women to get the hpv vaccine, turning them into gigantic whores, and probably destroying the sanctity of everything texans hold dear. i just dont know if it would work.

on the plus side, think of how awesome texas scientific textbooks would be if they finally just got to print whatever the hell they wanted to.

i'm really torn tbh.

total net revenue 2011 - $ 175,884,602,520.79
http://www.window.state.tx.us/finances/pubs/cashrpt/11/texas_annual_cash_report_2011.pdf

that's a pretty large revenue for any kind of doubtful response.

So the state of Texas has a slightly higher annual revenue than Apple (155 billion).

http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/aapl/financials

Does that sound like enough to run a medium sized country to you?

Drop in the bucket considering what they would now be on the hook to pay for.
