Why exactly is it a bad idea?
Flame Wars thread would let:
1) people who dig it find it easier,
2) make life easier on mods in main (lock vs move would probably draw less ire),
3) would keep it out of General better for those who don't like watching drama play out. (instead of a bunch of locked threads in there, they'd simply be moved out?)
+1 ... I don't generally get into any of the flame wars, but this actually seems like a better way of policing things to me.

True enough, guess that basically serves the same purpose.
So maybe tweak the suggestion to "have mods move flame threads to FFA rather than locking?"
I'm guessing the response would be - "start your flame wars in FFA to begin with".

that's what the forums are for, expressing your opinion, free speech and all that, isn't that in your constitution or something?

True... but I also agree with Chysil about the abuse of such leniency. And, also, certain forums should NOT allow rampant flaming (such as the suggestion and FAQ forums). Some forums NEED to stay on message and on target otherwise their purpose fails. I'm all for Dub's OP... just as long as it's where it belongs. Also, new very specific rules would also have to be drawn up so the flaming doesn't go overboard.
