Receiving style would require that the QB effectively be able to put the ball where only his receiver has a chance at it. Instead the calculation seems to be to try and put the ball on the numbers no matter what route is being run.

For example...

Fly route:

Quick - throw the ball deep and allow the receiver to 'go and get it'
Skilled - Drop the ball over the shoulders so that the receiver can make a catch in stride
Tough - Use the height, strength, and athleticism of the receiver to allow him to win a jump ball.

Though the QB should really be looking at the matchup. If there is single coverage between a fast CB and a tough WR, the QB would throw the ball in a very different place than he would in a matchup between a quick WR and a big CB.

The passing slider and the targetting system used by the QB are the enemies of real progress. Passing tendencies of a QB should not be universally applied. Just because a QB tends to gun the ball in doesn't mean that is the way he should throw every ball to every receiver.

This is where vision checks on the QB should be used.

I've been saying this forever. I agree 100%
