Jay, You know like I know, A Blocking TE can seal the Edge against a Pass Rushing DE at the LOLB Spot...Much less if they have an actual OL there. Like merenoise said, they came out with a Single Back Big, Big I, Trips, and a Run-N-Shoot for the Offense and they can't even give the Defense a 5-2? WTF??? Talk about unbalanced!! Teams can go with a Power Back from the Run-N-Shoot and plow up the Middle for 3-4 Yd gains all day long. You can try to bring a SS down in the Box but you'll get mostly Man-to-Man Coverage on the WR's and we all know that's it's easier to get 4 Starting caliber WR's than it is to get 4 Shutdown Corners or they can put a Rec. TE in the 4th WR Slot and he will out run any S you can put there. I don't see much Balance there?

Well sorry for making a "smart comment" but you do know you can run a 4-3 and use the PSLB as a 100 strength LB.

I use a power LB to fake a few 5-2 set ups but because of the limitations on where you can shift it creates really bad gaps that wouldn't be a problem if I could use an additional interior lineman instead. Since LBs are much lighter than DEs or DTs they aren't really ideal especially if I want to spread the line. Even a power LB is going to get destroyed by an NT if I line him up over him.

I assume NT is a typo and you mean Blocking TE?

No, sometimes I want to spread the line and have the blocking TE with the LDE over him. Which means to run a 5-2 I need to move the MLB in over the NT. I sometimes use the LB as you are envisioning over the play side TE but really depends on what gap I am trying to defend. For the Singleback Big set with two blockers at TE I'd like to be able to put 5 real linemen on the line and still be able to force my HH LBs outside to cover the blocking TEs or blitz.

If they go Singleback Big with two receiving TEs but run inside a bit I'd like to not have to sacrifice a secondary player to cover the TEs because I am using my HH LB to act as a poor man's D-lineman.
