And yes, it should be based on average with simply a minimum number of attempts rather than on total punt yards, whether it's net or gross yardage.

but net I think is much more the punt team's stat than the punter

I have a punter, and aim for net. If I wanted gross I'd go 100% distance over hang time, and would have chosen the opposite archetype (I chose technician over boomer and have excellent Vision on him).

Instead, I go for Vision while also getting Strength up, and favor hang time over distance to some degree. Those help my punter's net while hurting his gross; but the net is what matters to the team.

but if you have a shitty coverage team, it doesn't matter how good your punter is

I don't deny that, but I think the job of the punter is to do what he can to get the best net average rather than gross average.

they need to get rid of the hangtime vs distance slider. punting is about the situation and shouldnt be a 1 size fits all mentality. as is, its usually a matter of going for the only personal award available or being a team player and ending up near the bottom of the rankings. its why i've preferred to play on bad teams that let mine punt a ton every season and going for gold wont hurt the team any more than the offense and defense already do.

while i have some punter people in 1 place, do you watch your punter's HOF ranking? my punter went from moving up about 10 spots a game, to being stuck at the same place for 4 seasons even tho almost everyone in front of him has long long ago retired. support says to open a bug, the bug gets closed even tho everyone agrees it looks wonky. just wondering if others have noticed the same thing.

I don't even know where to find his HOF rating, and don't care about it. I simply try to figure what Hang Time/Distance setting is going to help the team he's on, and what attributes I need to increase after I've ultra-capped Punting, from watching his punts a fair amount of the time (going to the text PbP page, finding his punts, and replaying them).

For the reason that I like to play with the Hang Time vs. Distance slider, and that's basically my big strategic decision as a punter's agent, I disagree with getting rid of it. I'm a fan of hang time in rl and tend to lean that way, but if the team isn't providing any coverage when I do it I sometimes think it's best to just go for distance and kick the snot out of the ball and hope that they'll get to the returner after a longer return, but maybe for more net yards.

Lately I've been mostly hang timing it....

Not strictly true, a lot more fair catches around this season.

+1 because Dave Mr Majors wants it and I respect his opinion.

another thing that might help is for punt distance to be more realistic. 50+ yarders should be the exception, not the norm

The thread Kicker/Punter MVP - Adjustment needed has been merged into this thread

Link

I just looked at the OPL MVP standings and saw that each conference MVP for K/P is the punter from the 0-12 team. They have 186 and 194 punts respectively. I looked a bit more, and noticed that all but one Punter that is currently in the MVP rankings has at least 100 punts. The one other punter had 90 punts, and the 2nd best punt average in the league. Two of the punters that are in the MVP race have the two worst punt averages in the league, but a very high volume of punts.

It appears that the MVP calculations rely heavily on volume of punts, which is very skewed IMO. I would think that punt average, Coffin Corner%, IN5%, IN10%, IN20%, and TB% would all weigh more heavily than volume. I don't think volume should even be included in the calculation.

If you are going to adjust one MVP formula you will need to fix them all.
While you are at it fix the hall of shame.
