It actually took me a bit to remember, but the same thing happens to me in pro sports. I'm a big baseball fan and I can't remember who won the World Series. What is it with sports championships that makes them seem so exciting at the time, then totally irrelevant a month later?

I've never forgotten that ass whooping Greedy Speedy and the Rams gave Providence back in CPL.
It's all about the level of the ass-whoopery.
